1990 Nissan 300ZX Coupe V6 24 Valve

Summary:

A very expensive car to maintain, but when it's on the road, drivers beware!

Faults:

The water pump went around $73000.

Also a few gaskets had to be replaced.

I had some electrical problems which was very costly. Other than that, just wear and tear, the belts, a few hoses etc.

General Comments:

I love this car, it's so quick and fast.

Always turning heads where ever I go, wondering what kind of car that is that with its Ferrari like shape, it shines.

I'm 6'2' and this car has enough leg room for much more.

There are also many ways to make this a faster car with minor modifications.

You can only do so much to the non turbo models and still they are very fast but when you grow out of a non turbo, the sky's the limit for a Twin Turbo model.

Also getting stopped can be very expensive and I say spend the money for a really good radar detector. It's a must if you plan on driving this car.

Don't mistake this for an everyday driving car, cause it's not. It wasn't designed to be an all around everyday work car.

It's a Sunday driving, summer time car and nothing more. If you plan on buying one just be prepared to spend some money, just buying one is hardly the first step. It's the upkeep and attention for this car that many don't think about before purchasing one.

After many years waiting for the price to come down, I just got a beautiful 90 TT silver with some new mags.72000miles. I swear, I never knew 12 grand could ellicit so many comments about a car. Almost every day someone makes a comment at work. Everyone now thinks I must make BIG BUCKS. Its better than a promotion in someways. I have had 3 gals at work call me on the phone to ask "Is that your car? What is it?" I also have an Altima ---I drive it 70 in a 65 and everyone passes me. I drive the Z 67 in a 65 and hardly anyone passes. Granted, it ahs been lowered and has a mean looking exhaust system on it and the VOX rims set it off. Have I died and gone to heaven.

Summary:

They stopped making it for a reason

Faults:

The Turbo died at around 93k, it was a very expensive fix, which came out to be around $3000. They say the Turbo lasts for 70-80k.

Crappy wheel bearings have hit ABS on my car, $100 fix.

Did the Camshaft Timing belt at 70,000.

General Comments:

After 65,000 miles, the car just starts going down hill right away. Even for the later years.

All in all, the car was great when it was young. A popular magazine once said "buy this car for the first 65,000 miles, then get rid of it".

You are such a typical American. A sophisticated, high performance car is going to need regular and expensive maintenance if it is going to last the distance. If you are after a place to consume McDonald's while driving down the Interstate, that you can thrash and neglect, buy a Lincon Navigator, or something equally as hideous. The Fairlady Z was not intended as just a suburban hack.

1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo V6 3.0L

Summary:

Powerful car, that breaks down

Faults:

Turbo 92,000 (expensive).

Gearbox and transmission 107,000 (expensive).

Fuel injectors 123,000 (expensive).

Various electrical, that were not very expensive as well.

General Comments:

High performance, can't handle the load?

One of fastest cars I have ever owned, but requires a lot of work to keep it running. It becomes expensive very quick.

1990 Nissan 300ZX Turbo 3.0L V6

Faults:

AIV valves, TWICE, once at 64k, the other at 116k.

Transmission went at 122k.

Turbo at 89k (and acting odd again).

General Comments:

I won't lie to you, this car is sweet when it's running well, it's fast. Reliability on the other hand, kinda iffy. I know many will say it's not true (they must be lucky), but two of my friends also have these cars, only slightly newer.. and the same problems occur.

Comfort could be a little better as well.

Don't get me wrong, I like this car, but I won't be very sad when I let it go.

1990 Nissan 300ZX

Summary:

Cool. Lots of car for the money

Faults:

Replaced the drive train in 2000 because the car had developed a growl and extra vibration. Only about $900 to repair, though.

Replaced front struts and tie rods last year, as well. Had problems with new Nokian NRV tires - handles great but developed bumpiness, especially when cold. The car is very sensitive to minor tire balance or alignment variations; keep things tuned up!

Otherwise, this car has been extremely reliable and enjoyable. The engine has been flawless.

General Comments:

This is a fun car! I'd love to have the turbo for the extra acceleration, but I drive mostly curvy state highway roads which are ideal for this car (ride's a little harsh on Vermont dirt roads, though. Stick to the fast pavement!)

T-tops are a nice feature.

Faults:

Valve cover gasket needed to be replaced.

O2 sensor had to be replaced.

Throttle position switch had to be replaced.

Power transistor unit had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is very responsive and solid.

The car, equipped with Bridgestone Potenza series tires, is very predictable.

Braking is not as good as one would like and should be upgraded for spirited driving.

1990 Nissan 300ZX Non-turbo 6 cylinder, twin cam 24 valve

Summary:

It's fast, attractive, and reliable. Enough said

Faults:

I had to replace the clutch and the center propeller shaft bearing. Both were cheap operations, and would happen with any other car.

General Comments:

It eats gas, but I love it. It's very fast (especially if you work on the exhaust) and takes turns like no other.

It has very good leg room, a perfect clutch, and a perfect trunk for that double 12 inch woofer box that every ZX owner should have.
