1988 Nissan Sentra 1.6 liter

Summary:

Great car overall, but over 250,000 mileage it's time to sell

Faults:

Alternator twice, head gasket, struts, wheel bearings, shocks, master cylinder.

General Comments:

I believe this was a great car to own when it had less mileage on it. I bought it three years ago when it had 210,000 on it. Paid 500 for it, as it sat broken down with no past history about the car. What surprises me is the engine and transmission (auto) are original, and the car has 290000 on it and is still running fine for all that mileage on it. Good gas mileage and very reliable. Never been stuck on the side of the road.

Little things are going wrong due to the wear and tear it's gone through. It's probably time to retire it before I start spending too much money on repairs.

The car would have been a lot more comfortable if it was a four door. It's hard for people to get in and out of the back seat.

I must be one of the lucky ones when it comes to power. I think it has enough power to not have any complaints about its acceleration.

I just have water only in the radiator, and on the hottest days (110 degrees) the car runs quite cool with no problems with overheating. It is just a very good economy car.

If I could find another one with under 100000 miles on it, I would buy it. It's cheap on insurance and to repair.

"I just have water only in the radiator..."

Which begs the question - WHY?

"I just have water only in the radiator"

You're going to rust the engines internals from the inside out, but at those miles I guess you wouldn't mind killing it.

I recall seeing a Buick V8 where the owner had cooled it with water rather than antifreeze; the engine was pretty much done at that point.

What they said - water only went out with "Tippacanoe and Tyler too".

1988 Nissan Sentra E 1.6Litre, fuel injected

Summary:

It's a GREAT car, EXCEPT for this one unbelievably up-setting problem

Faults:

Replace front right caliper at 41,000.

Replaced the rotors at about 40,000.

Had water in wheel well a few years ago. Needed new gasket, or something.

A few other fairly minor problems, except for one!!!

General Comments:

This car is basically a GREAT car, except for one problem. It races on warm-up, and has for the PAST 15 years! Because of this one problem, I have hated this car for all these years! The racing is somewhat intermittent, and is therefore extremely difficult to explain to a mechanic. I've asked many mechanics about the problem (including the local Nissan Dealer), and none of them have been able to help me. Most of them say that they can't find anything wrong with the car, even tho' I once left it at a shop for a week, in an effort to have them find the problem. It's actually got 43,400 miles on it, and it's in basically good condition. It's seldom been driven in winter.

Best bang for the buck

Axle boots 85659.

Fuel/Temp gauge voltage regulator 94460.

Muffler 113434.

New distributer 147254.

New distributer (warranty) 185365.

Clutch, Axles 191825.

Starter 200379.

Oil pan gasket 209466.

Charged air conditioner 213700.

Engine 218552.

General Comments:

These cars are great if you want to get from point A to B.

They handle good since they are a very light car.

There is not much power, but because of this I get 34-38MPG. Over 40MPG on the highway going 55-60 MPH.

This was my Wife's car until we had children and got a minivan (1996). We decided to keep it as a third car.

I've never had to have this car towed, but have limped it home a few times.

Replaced the engine at 218552 miles. The head gasket blew and being a mechanic I figured I could get it home (wrong).

All other maintenance other than that listed has been routine.
