2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 V6

Summary:

GM should be standing behind these cars and honoring all repairs to get the care running correctly

Faults:

Just two days after purchasing my 2000 Alero, it had to go into the shop for new rotors and pads. Throughout the history of the car, the brakes and rotors have been replaced seven times.

I am on my third intake gasket.

My fuel mileage has been poor, only averages 17 mpg, and the dealership says that is normal?!?

I have a grinding noise when I turn the wheels, again the dealership says that all is well. And just recently I have heard a clunking noise while my car is idling.

General Comments:

The looks of the Alero are great however with all the mechanical problems I think it is a poor purchase on my point. Also a poor design mechanically on Oldsmobile and GM.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4 V6

Summary:

Nice car with some flaws

Faults:

The head gasket out at 53,000 miles. $1,100 repair.

Both front power windows failed due to cheap plastic clips... need to replace entire motor assembly... approx $300/ window.

Molding on outside of windshield pulling away from window... needs replacement.

Leather sleeve on parking brake pulling apart at seams.

Oil and tire pressure warning lights are worthless in terms of reliability.

General Comments:

I love this car except for the problems that seem to be coming too soon. Head gasket at 53,000 is ridiculous... windows were cheaply made and thus broke.

This car will probably be an excellent used car after I take care of the repairs. Excellent handling, excellent engine... very comfortable to drive...I'm 6'4, 215 and fit inside comfortably. Would recommend only if a mechanic checks out brakes, and head gasket... be on the lookout for quality issues with trim, seats, etc.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL

Faults:

My power lock button has fallen into the driver side door.

General Comments:

It's a good car, but it handles poorly in the snow. Good traction, excellent handling. For a 2.4L it's pretty fast.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4L V6 PFI OHV 12V

Summary:

An over-priced piece of junk

Faults:

I have about 80,000 miles on it and have put brakes in it 3 times which seems excessive.

The slide track under the passenger seat broke at about 15,000 miles. It was replaced under the factory warranty.

The drivers side power window regulator broke and the window tilted 45 degrees and couldn't be put up. Luckily I was close to home when this happened and it was summer. I had this fixed under the extended warranty I purchased.

Also, the car started leaking coolant so I brought it in for that. They told me it was the intake manifold gaskets and that it wasn't covered under my extended warranty. After speaking with somebody at the warranty company, they changed their minds and said it was covered.

Also, the heater/cooling fan switch stopped working on the first two settings. I brought that in and they replaced a resistor, covered under my extended warranty.

Last, I've brought it in four times now for the rear defrost to be fixed. The first time I brought it in, they said there was a break in the wiring and they fixed. After picking it up and having it sit outside overnight, I tried the defrost in the morning and it didn't work. I brought it back and they said it was a broken wire in the window. They fixed that and then it worked... but only for 2 days. I brought it back again and now they're saying it's a module of some sort. I'm supposed to bring it back in a week to have that fixed.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL-4 2.4

Summary:

Unreliable money pit

Faults:

After reading other comments I have had the same problems. My service engine light soon, "trac off", and low tire pressure tire lights have been on for over a year. I have had the car into several shops numerous times for the same problems and my computor reads misfires every time. I have had 3 coil towers, several new sets of spark plugs, fuel injectors cleaned, new Catalytic converter and my car is now back in the shop. Now it is the coil pack, as not all cylinders are working. My car dies while driving, and the service engine light soon blinks consistently. My hazard switch/turn signal does not work and buzzes.

My drivers side window does not work either, I am not even going to bother fixing it, I'll just deal with it.

General Comments:

It is a nice looking car that I would like to keep. I just want my car to be fixed so I don't have to worry about it dying every time I get in it. I should not have to keep paying for diagnostics that tell me same thing and the problem never gets fixed. It is very concerning that I am reading that other people with the same car are having the same problems. Please fix theses issue Oldsmobile.

The car has a "hard start", so they say. All I know is that I have had it with repairs and rental cars. The car will not start for anything at times and if you put it in neutral, roll it back and sometimes forward also, it will start, then sometimes not. After waiting some time it usually will start. It started early on and has been looked at and/or repaired 6 times now.

The brakes are a joke. I've had three brake jobs done now, replaced rotors twice and there is still a horrible grinding sound coming from the front end.

Just to name a few other problems, Hub and Baring unit, lower intake, and the paint is peeling off my front end.

Your Hazard lights are under recall along with your computer, and if you have a manual transmission the shifter linkage is under recall. So they will fix these for you free of charge at your local GM Dealership.
