1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS 3.8

Summary:

Nice looking wheels, maybe a "Devil in Disquise..."

Faults:

Starting problem: Slow to turn over, at first attempt; I retry and then it's almost flooded. Our only remedy has been to turn the key to on (so all dash lights/radio are lit), then once lit I turn the key over to start. Then it starts right up. I have not had a stall situation on the road as others have stated. The prior owner did replace the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR just before selling it; he said it was $200 for the repair.

Turn signals: Sporadically stop working, both at the same time. I don't get any action on the inside (lights not flashing inside, no blinking noise). Also verified from outside they do not work. This is very unsafe as it impacts how you communicate on the road, and your ability to safely drive, I believe this should be a recall.

Bussman fuses: I checked fuse panel on the turn signals. What I found interesting was that every single one was 'brown' on the metal (age or voltage problem?), no broken filament inside, however they were brown also as if they are being stressed and not blown, YET. I am changing all of ours just due to the 'soot' factor, and I figure it might as well be done to decrease the chance we blow one; a cheap precautionary fix.

Power steering: To parallel park you need to drive slow and crank the wheel hard, I feel as though there is no power steering when I need to do this.

Fogging windows: It is Fall, and I am having a lot of trouble getting the windows to defrost, though the temperature and blowers seem to work.

General Comments:

Unfortunately I think this car was misrepresented to me when I bought it as my son's first car. I am concerned as these problems seem to be prevalent. Perhaps my son will build some mechanical skills, learning from some of the experts and novices who have shared their wisdom here.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL

Summary:

Satisfied

Faults:

Indicator lights for heat/defrost/radio don't work.

Molding below side windows peeled off.

Terrible rattling noise, passenger side, turning right only.

Car would shut off when driving, resulting in loss of steering.

General Comments:

Mechanic was stumped re: rattling noise, but finally found it was the "starter gear" rattling against housing when turning, but returned to normal when wheels turned straight.

Misdiagnosis cost $350. for wheel bearing, which wasn't the problem. Dash-light problem too costly to trace & fix. Starter cost $494., including 1/2 labour cost.

Mileage great on trips. Engine performance & comfort great.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue gls 3.8

Summary:

The best car of 4 wheels

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I love the car.

Previous car was a 1987 Mercury Grand Marque, loved it cause of the room.

This car is quite a bit smaller, but handles so much better.

It molds to the road and is a smooth ride.

Has all the gadgets you want.

Couldn't get a better car.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS 3.5L

Summary:

Superlative mid-sized sedan!

Faults:

Crank sensor replaced at 87K miles.

MAF cleaned at 87K miles.

Air & gas filters replaced at 87K miles.

Needs new rear struts (leaking).

Seems to go through oil pretty quickly (low oil light is on at 3000 miles consistently). Usually down 1.5 quarts, with total oil capacity of 5.5 quarts.

General Comments:

Other than normal maintenance (tires, brakes, oil changes, etc.), I have had NO mechanical/performance issues (prior to Service Engine Soon light on at 87K miles). Vehicle has been paid for over-and-over; hope I get another 87K maintenance-free miles out of it!

The "Shortstar" V-6 is the little brother of the Northstar V-8 - check your oil level early and often ;)

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Summary:

Best car I've owned since my '67 Chevelle SS

Faults:

Service Engine light comes on often. Uses about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Rain leaked under windshield.

General Comments:

I think this is one of the best cars I have ever owned. It has more pickup than either of the 2 t-birds I had, I took it up to 120mph easily and it was wanting to go higher. It averages 24/25 mpg. It has the spring loaded front hood and a locking gas door that I wish my $36,000 chrysler had, but doesn't. Aside from the service engine light and the leaky windshield I haven't had anything to complain about. One of the best cars I have ever owned. I bought a new Bronco in '74m a new Cordova in '75, a new T-bird in '84, a new Subaru in '93, a new Mountaineer in '00, a new Pacifica in 2004, and a few used cars along the way, and I rate this Intrigue at the top. I love it, and I hope it lasts forever, I plan to keep it a long time.
