1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue LS 3.5 V6

Summary:

The 3.5 V-6 in this car is not right considering the care it has been given and I would buy another

Faults:

I purchased the car from the original owner and she said that the oil was changed every 3000 miles, but, since I bought it I am adding a quart of oil every 1800 miles. Also, there is a clunking sound coming from the left front end when the steering wheel is turned hard to the right or left.

General Comments:

I have owned many, many cars during the last 39 years that I have been buying and driving cars and this vehicle is using an excessive amount of oil when you consider the low miles on the engine. I enjoy the comfort of the olds intrigue, but, I am concerned about the oil consumption and the feel of the steering.

Everything official I've seen, and Intrigues I've viewed, show that the 3.8L was on the 1998 Intrigue, the 3.5L engine was introduced for the 1999 model year, NOT available on the 1998.

So I don't know about your comments on the 3.5L engine. Intrigues continued to carry the 3.5L from 1999 until they were discontinued in the early 2000s, according to my data. -- So they couldn't have been too bad, could they?

Also, the latest new GM 6 cylinder models are starting to use the 3.5L engine as well.

Unfortunately, it is not the same 3.5, if (as I believe) you are referring to the NorthStar derived "ShortStar" V6. The new 3.5's are a reworked version of the 60 degree V6, formerly in 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 liter trim. They are all good engines (except for the intake manifold gasket fiasco on the 3.4's), but I would much prefer the ShortStar. Yet another horrendous corporate decision by GM.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 3.8

Summary:

Beautiful curves, dependable stability. I love it!

Faults:

As soon as I drove the car off the lot I decided to take it out of town. I got halfway to my destination (about 20 minutes into my ride) the coolant light came on. When I got into town I had a guy take a look at it and it was a little low. He added some free of charge.

His main concern was a very badly worn belt. He replaced it at cost.

It got me off to a worried start, but this car has been great ever since.

General Comments:

The gas mileage has been fair to poor for a car of it's class. I pretty much expected that when I chose the 3.8 engine.

I expected a little bit more get up and go for the size of the engine. I probably should have pushed it a little while test driving it, but I'm sure you know how it goes with the dealer in the back seat.

Other than those two things I love the car. It has proven comfortable for 4-5 hour long trips and has plenty of room in the trunk for all of my camping gear.

I love being able to turn the traction control off and on, first car I've had where that was an option.

The sound system is great as far as stock systems go. The controls tend to get very warm to the touch if the dash lights are up all the way.

If I were given one wish for the car it would be folding back seats for my trips to home depot. Guess you can't have everything in one package!

The intrigues back seats do fold down, if you pull the handles on the side of the seat.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GX 3.5

Summary:

A nice family car that runs and looks like a sports car

Faults:

The only problem I've had with my intrigue is the power windows. The rear passenger window stopped working. So I took it in and they replaced the regulator on it. Well a couple of weeks later it stopped working again, so I took it in and they said it had something to do with the main control panel switch, so they are going to replace that when the part comes in.

General Comments:

Overall this car is beautiful, runs great, and I'm very proud to own it.

The only thing I'm worried about is the windows. I've read most of the reviews, and some of them have had problems relating to the power windows. So if anyone can email me back with some comments or suggestions, please feel free to do so. I would really appreciate it. Thanks. (www.bretta_05@yahoo.com)
