1985 Pontiac Fiero SE 2m4 2.5 liter 4 cylinder

Summary:

The Fiero is a great bargain

Faults:

I bought the car in not running condition. It turned out to be a bad piston.

I replaced the pistons, rings, connecting rods and bearings. Gave the car a complete tune up and it ran great.

However we should've resurfaced the crank because it ended up spinning a rod bearing. Now it sits in my dad's garage.

General Comments:

This was a very fun car to drive. Light, handled well and got exceptional gas mileage.

My SE had every option available, everything worked!

The WS6 suspension and the '86 GT wheels helped the car's ride significantly. It handled very well.

I paid $800 for it. And ended up putting $400 into getting it running. The verdict, when you've got the engine apart, don't cut corners. : (Keeping an eye on the oil level is key. Don't skip out on that, pay attention to the car and you will be rewarded!

Should've fixed the crank, I'd still be driving it.

Fuse-able link went out, relay problems with cooling fan, and fuel system, inside exhaust gasket burned out, headlight motor went, and now the clutch is down; all within 3000 miles.

General Comments:

Handling is a little off.

Braking is a little hard.

This car, is what I want.

And in time, it will be the way I want. T.L.C.

I knew there was going to be work involved with this car when I bought it. That is what makes it personal!

Strip it, build it, make it yours. YAH, BUBBA THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!!!!

Yeah excellent low cost capable ride. I had a Fiero GT same year as yours for 15 yrs. I loved it too. Get some Suspension Techniques springs and put a cold induction on it and enjoy the great handling and superb sound and performance for a pittance.

1985 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8 V6

Summary:

A poorly executed and failed attempt to compete with the Toyota MR2

Faults:

Recalled for engine oil leaks and engine fires.

Ignition module failed after 28,000 miles.

Clutch failed after 30,000 miles.

Fuel pump failed after 35,000 miles.

2nd fuel pump failed after 40,000 miles.

2nd clutch failed after 41,000 miles.

3rd fuel pump failed after 47,000 miles.

Passenger seat power window stopped working intermittently after 35,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car is fairly quick for its day and handles like it is on rails if pavement is dry.

But if the pavement is wet, it slides all over the road, especially with the stock Goodyear Eagle GT tires.

Interior is cramped and those taller than 5' 11" will have to recline the seat to avoid hitting the roof.

Lack of power steering makes parallel parking an exercise, especially with the original equipment tires.

The headrest mounted stereo speakers are a nice touch, but the quality of the stereo unit is so so.

Interior construction is rather shabby and susceptible to sun damage. The car has no glove compartment or really any storage in the interior at all and only a tiny trunk aft of the engine.

The battery tray is susceptible to rot because the battery itself is exposed to the elements so rain washes over it and the acid rots everything beneath it.

1985 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8L V6

Summary:

This is just the start of my journey with this car I have always wanted, I will try to keep informed

Faults:

Well it is a pretty sweet little white 1985 Fiero GT 2.8L V-6 car. 30,000 miles on it, one owner with paperwork.

I researched it on the net as much as I could, finding all the recall notices and other owner statements, but was still interested in this car.

I found it advertised on AutoTrader.com and the car was located 300 miles away for $3500. Well I bought it, and a rain storm broke out and the wipers didn't work, so that was the first thing to fix. Was also hard to see out the back window, as the headliner was torn. It made the trip back 300 miles home, but the passenger front brake froze up and needed repair. Tried to get the wheel off, only to find a locking lug and no key, so chiseled one off (took all day) to find 1/64 lining left. Had to take the car to a dealer to get the lugs removed on the other three wheels, then replaced all pads, only to find the master cylinder was blown.

Replaced engine oil and filter, and transmission oil, as it was long over due. Then the battery went dead and needed charging. This all happened in two weeks time.

I still have to bleed the brake system, and change out the cooling system fluid, and have the air conditioning system converted to R-134 or find someone to charge it with R-12. Then a complete ignition system check (plugs, wires, cap).

After all this, I can get down and start my body mods, such as a hood cooling scoop for the radiator, twin snorkel scoops for the back deck that raise to the roof of cockpit, and a Mustang hood scoop mounted in reverse, with another radiator cooling fan mounted inside, then two side scoops behind the doors (left for air cleaner and right for oil cooler), then finishing the whole thing of with two twelve inch stripes down the top of the car. I have seen one of these done this way, and it looks trick, although of course there will be differences.

General Comments:

I can't wait to get it back on the road, and to start all the rest of the project.

The tires are really good, and the interior is great also.

The car looks to have been taken care of up to a point, but not neglected.
