1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT V6

Summary:

Another GM tragedy

Faults:

I bought this vehicle from a Mom and Pop dealership with only 1 previous owner. Within the first week I had it the belt needed replaced and the battery went dead.

Now I have this serious clunking noise when I turn corners.

The dealership insists that all Grand Am's have this noise.

My volume knob doesn't work, I need to use the one of the steering wheel.

The driver's side car window doesn't always go up and down smoothly.

General Comments:

I really like the look of my Grand Am, but next time I will buy a car that is more practical than sporty.

I'm not sure about that noise when you turn, but check your power steering fluid level ASAP. I've had a leak twice on my '99 SE and both times I had weird noises when turning. Avoid having to replace the power steering rack ($$$) like I did the first time.

Man I had this problen with the turning to chack if it is just a leaf spring.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 3.4 V6

Summary:

I love this automobile, this car is banging

Faults:

When I bought my Grand Am SE1 V6, there was nothing at all wrong with it. I kept the car well, meaning all oil changes, checking of the fuses, and tire rotating were done appropriately.

General Comments:

This car has it all.

However, like any vehicle, just make sure the oil changes are done at the correct time and date.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.4

Summary:

An extremely good car for a really good price

Faults:

When I first got the car, the only problem I had with it was that the rear driver's side window would not go down. It was a "costly" fix I thought to myself, but after the first thorough washing and waxing, the window rolled down.

That problem was more than likely result of poor care from the previous owner.

Since then I have had no other problems.

General Comments:

I have really enjoyed owning this car, while I'm still making payments.

I have added one thing that the car did not have, that was a spoiler. I'm pleased that the car did not have a spoiler, on it since I had planned on getting it replaced any way. I replaced it with an APR Performance Evolution GT-II spoiler. I have planned on purchasing new 18" Enkei rims and a body kit to make the appearance of the car more attractive with the addition of a "Ram-Air" hood to compliment the spoiler.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.4

Summary:

Great car for the money. Knock on wood

Faults:

Front coil springs broke in half, one at a 110,000 km the other at 120,000.

Radio display screws up occasionally.

First brake job done at 110,000 km. Front only. Rear brakes still good.

First set of new tires installed at 110,000 km.

First new battery was installed at 115,000 km.

First set of plugs installed at 120,000 km.

Oil and filter done every 5,000 km. Fuel and air filter checked and replaced as necessary.

One out of 60 vehicles flash me with their brights at night when I don't have my brights on. Headlight aim may be off a little.

General Comments:

Up until now car has been reliable with no serious problems other than coil springs.

Car is quick and handles quite well. Much better than my Le Baron Turbo Coupe.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 liter

Summary:

Will ultimately turn out to be a money pit

Faults:

Power Steering Hose at 30,000 km

Power Steering Hose at 60,000 km

Power Steering Hose at 90,000 km

Factory Recall on Brake Rotors 60,000 km

(all 4 Rotors were changed)

Leaking coolant started around 90,000 km

Service Engine light goes on and off even though regular servicing is done.

Rotors are needing replacement again at 150,000 km mark.

CD / Tape deck replaced twice. Display still not working properly.

Service Vehicle Light goes on / off with every fill up (figured this one out to be the gas cap)

General Comments:

While this car has definitely had it's ups and downs, it really hasn't cost a pile of money yet. The most aggravating point is the failure of the indicator lights to go off and stay off. It's been reasonably affordable on gas and is actually quite enjoyable to drive. Most of the repairs were done prior to the warranty expiring and I have done some on my own. It's a shame that the brake rotors are starting to appear as a constant problem with this car. If anyone is curious, the Power Steering Hose repairs run around $400 Cdn. Rotors are around $100 per, and pads are around $50.

I recently worked at a Pontiac dealership and in the five months I was employed there I saw about two thousand Grand Am's in the service department. A number of these cars were in on a weekly basis. The owners were never happy with the supposed performance of the cars or anything about them. If you have purchased a new Grand Am you are most likely in for a big long headache.

OK something about that last comment on the change oil light. I bet you did it your self didn't you.. i mean the oil change. OK the thing is that you have to pump the gas pedal and do some things. The mechanics usually do it after the oil change. You can read about it in the manual.
