2000 Saturn SL SL1

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Nothing yet... I have owned it for about 5 months now.

General Comments:

Excellent little car. No power, but for city driving and general use it rocks. Great on gas and i got it cheap. In canadian dollars with tax's in i got it for 8 grand. I traded in my 94 grand prix that i bought at an auction for 1500 bucks it was leaking oil into the engine. They ended up give me 2 grand for it. I made out on this deal.

2000 Saturn SL SL2 1.9 DOHC

Summary:

Fun to drive, but so-so reliability

Faults:

Radiator sprung a coolant leak which was fixed under warranty.

Lights in the dashboard burned out prematurely, and were also replaced under warranty.

Was rear-ended in an accident. If the car wasn't insured, I would be crying all the way to the bank, as it would have cost me $700 Canadian to replace the bumper. And this was a minor accident!

Also noticed that when damaged, the plastic fenders indeed do not dent, as they say in the TV ads. They shatter.

Engine is starting to get really noisy and shaky when it's cold.

Original Firestone tires wore out prematurely and began leaking at 50'000 km. Replaced them with Michelin tires. Much better tires.

General Comments:

Pretty good looking car, and easy to keep looking good.

Fun car to drive, has more get-go than my old Corolla. Enough torque to outgun most rice-rockets (Honda Civics etc)

On the small side (What do you expect? It's a subcompact) but still surprisingly roomy. Lots of headroom both in the front and in the rear.

Seats are a bit low, but the front driver's seat is adjustable.

Trunk is a funny shape and doesn't hold bulky things like suitcases well.

2000 Saturn SL SL2 1.9

Summary:

Don't buy!

Faults:

This car has had many issues with it. Too many to list. The top one is: Squealing front brake problem since new, dealer has yet to resolve, related to this rusted brake calipers. Next, spacing in dashboard against gauges there is a big gap, dealer has yet to resolve, leaving a creaking sound from the dash every time you go over a bump. Molding strips have also had their problems. The Saturn Corp, gives you the round-about about repairs as does the corp headquarters. They think you know nothing about what is wrong, they tell you to take it in to the dealer to be looked at. The final answer it is the mechanic say within Saturn specs, that is BS. I know they have a lot of problems that they don't know how to resolve, all I can say is the SL series is being replaced at the end of this year with a new version, the Ion. To all my future car buyers, watch out for Saturn, take a good look before buying, check over the entire car, and see what you are really getting. Cars are getting more expensive and less quality is going into them, leaving the consumer with the buck to pay.

General Comments:

The 5speed manual is awful, the clutch is awful. You must give yourself at 4 thousand on the tach between gears to keep up with traffic. The seats are not comfortable. You sit to low, when exit it is very hard. Also if you turn the wheel a bit when shutting off the car and then try to restart it is next to impossible. I have had this problem on all my saturns.

I agree totally with the bad Saturn review. I have a 1997 Saturn sc1, and it is a piece of crap. The car is a base model with a/c. The air has never worked as good as my other car (It is not a Saturn), and they are both R-134A. The seats are too low and uncomfortable, the ignition doesn't work unless you play with the key for 10 minutes, so I leave it just past the lock, but not on accessory, If you put one person in the back seat, it bottoms the suspension on a small bump, with four people in the car it can't get up hills, the starter doesn't work when it's hot, the clutch is totally unbearable (If you stop at a light, you have to put it in neutral, then fight to get it back in gear), all the plastic creaks and rattles, and I'm sure there's lots I can't think of now.

I don't think I will ever own another Saturn.

Thanks,

It's no wonder all the kids today drive foreign cars.

Marcel.
