1995 Toyota 4Runner SR-5 3.0 V6

Summary:

Nice vehicle, but I should have had it checked by a mechanic

Faults:

Overall, the car runs fine. Everything works on it, but... the engine burns a quart of oil every 350 miles!

I am being told by the local dealerships that not only are my valve guides and seals bad, but the oil rings are probably worn.

General Comments:

The Toyota 3.0 V6 3VZ motor is a poor one, according to the engine re-builder that supplies the local Toyota dealerships with short blocks. They said the problem is with the flimsy pistons. When they rebuild the motors, they install much heavier duty pistons.

The valve seals on this motor have a tendency to dry out between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, causing some oil consumption...approx. 1 quart in 1,000 to 1,500 miles.

Same experience with this engine. Had to be rebuilt at 107k miles because of burning oil. Thought it was something I did or prior owner, but it looks like the engine is a lemon.

I own a 1995 Toyota 4- Runner and I am also burning oil at the rate of approx 1 qt every 500-600 miles. Should I replace just the seals, or go ahead into the engine and replace the rings as well?

1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3.0L V6

Summary:

The Toyota 4Runner is one dependable, sharp looking vehicle

Faults:

The clutch needed to be replaced at 80000 miles (not bad).

Power antenna died at 108000 miles.

General Comments:

The 4Runner has been a great vehicle both on and off road. From snowy winters in Colorado to the heat and humidity of Georgia, the truck has never let me down.

The 3.0L V6 engine is underpowered for any kind of towing, but does pretty well cross country.

The cup holders are right in front of the vents, bad idea.

General Comments:

The engine is too small and it is a gas guzzler. Otherwise it is great.
