2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5

Summary:

Bulletproof

Faults:

At about 75k, replaced the water pump.

At about 25k, replaced the O2 sensor.

Other than that, regular maintenance including timing belt every 90-100k.

All in all, solid!

General Comments:

Might be small for bigger people.

I regret not getting 4WD, but the thing is practically bullet proof if you take care of it. Oil changes, air filters, and clean the MAF every now and then.

I believe I can get another 200k out of her.

Toyota is a myth, and their niche is point A to B non enthusiast drivers, mostly afraid of driving. Toyota deserve awards for reliability based on simplicity.

I remember my 4runner 2002 as a rugged looking pretender. But in fact, it is a poor performer that cost me an engine when I got stuck off camber. It is called oil starvation.

My last Toyota. Late models could be worse. The more complex they become, the worse they get...

2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited 3.4L V6

Summary:

Love the truck, Toyota needs to step up and accept responsibility for their product

Faults:

Bought this 4Runner barely used from Ford dealership, still under factory warranty & have had no problems except the power antenna & a BLOWN ENGINE at 60800 miles! Normal driving conditions, actually on my birthday, on the interstate with my wife, in FL, clear day, everything normal - loud "clunking" noise, check engine & oil lights on at the same time, engine almost stopped turning over, like a rough idle & I somehow managed to slam it into nuetral & coast over to the shoulder.

Towed back to my house (I am a fanatic about service & have always kept my trucks & equipment over & above what is required) so I could start figuring out what to do. The block actually had a hole low on the passenger side where a rod was thrown through the casing. My local Toyota dealership would not even talk to me over the phone about it & bent over backwards to not help me, even wanted to charge me to tow it the 4 miles in. I have always used an independent service shop who I know & trust so it wound up there.

$6000 later I have a Jasper re-manufactured engine with a 3 year, 100K mile warranty (better than Toyota). Corporate in CA will not do anything because I do not have an extended warranty & I was 800 miles over their 60000 mile power-train warranty - seriously?!?!

I have a ticket in with them, but I am not expecting anything from them. I have done as much research as I can on the Internet, but I am hoping that someone out there may have some ideas, I just want some help from Toyota with the $6000. I am a construction project manager & I know that anything we build we stand behind 100%, I guess I just want Toyota to do more than say sorry...

Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

General Comments:

Unfortunately the blown engine has soured me on Toyota, this is without a doubt the best truck I have ever owned. Everything works properly, extremely comfortable, very efficient, and looks great!

Have seen the same with a Camry engine. A hole in the block. Could not believe the thickness of the block: aluminum foil!! Wallmart standards.

2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Sport Edition 3.4L V6

Summary:

Best vehicle I've ever owned!!

Faults:

Nothing went wrong with my 4Runner...not a single thing!!

General Comments:

I loved my 4Runner!! She was a great car and took care of me. I never had to take it to the shop except for the usual oil changes and what not.

The traction control saved my hide many times and is a great feature on this SUV!!

The 4Runner, like many other Toyota's, held its value and is definitely a great buy! I wish I had never traded it in!

Water leak inside the car in winter time, salt stain, still not able to fiend the source.

Air condition not cold enough.

Rust spot on the door! the only thing dealer fixed.

Overall this is a bad car, compared to my 1992 MB, BIG, BIG deference.

This person's complaints are all minor. No mention is made of vehicle performance, frequency of repair, etc.

LOL. Not to mention the fact that they were comparing it to a Mercedes.

4th Feb 2010, 01:22

Especially comparing it to a '92 model when MB really knew how to build quality products. It's unrealistic to compare this vehicle to a car costing maybe twice as much (depending on the model).
