1995 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L

Summary:

The Camry is the ultimate cheap man's car

Faults:

Replaced the motor and transmission.

Replaced constant velocity axles.

Replaced R-pinion.

Replaced distributor.

Regular maintenance:

Brakes and struts.

Timing belt, gasket, seals, and water pump.

General Comments:

The car was purchased extremely abused about nine years ago (1500 dollars).

A teenager stuck in a snow bank over-revved the motor and blew a rod through the oil pan, also damaging the tranny as well.

A mechanic friend and I put a motor and tranny in the car (900.00).

We put on struts all the way around (600).

The car is spacious, luxurious, and has very good acceleration.

92-96 Camrys have been easy to repair and maintain for me. Being slightly mechanically inclined, I do most maintenance and repair myself.

There are a lot of parts to be found in junk yards.

1990's Toyota Camry was one of the most reliable cars ever made, I know people that still drive them to this day. Just a shame at over 20 years old now rust is going to get the better of them.

1995 Toyota Camry LE 4 cyl

Summary:

The best Camry (1995) ever made

Faults:

Limited issues - liquid leaks such as oil from head gasket and fluid from power steering.

Master cylinder has been replaced once, and needs another one now.

Plastic door handles become brittle with age.

General Comments:

After 270,000 miles, it still gets 34 MPG, just like it did when new.

Engine and transmission are operating great, with no problems after 270,000 miles - amazing! Also, original A/C compressor and still blows cool - remarkable !

After around 200,000 miles - I had planned to sell this car for parts once it died, but it never has. I still have it, and after 270,000 miles, it just keeps going and going.

These Camrys may seem "unexciting" to some, but they provided comfortable, reliable transportation, and were indeed some of the best Camry's ever built.

I wonder how the Fusion guy and explain those 270,000 relatively trouble free miles?

Congrats for the longevity - it's good to hear from someone who took care of their vehicle (and continues too).

BTW - For those Toyota detractors, I own 2 domestic cars, and the closest I've come to owning a Toyota was a 1990 Geo Prizm (Corolla), which was extremely reliable.

It's not as if the any of the competition in this segment could qualify as titillating, either. Sorry, but the Ford Fusion is not an exciting car.

At least with Ford you can go to other reviews on here and find some great examples.

1995 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Summary:

I feel very lucky to have gotten this car

Faults:

Nothing is wrong with this car, except the cassette player no longer works. The radio is fine.

General Comments:

I helped an elderly lady buy this car in 1995. Took her to the dealer. Even though she only used it occasionally, she loved it, and had all of the service done at the dealer, which she had records for.

She passed away last year, and I was informed by the executor of her estate that she had left the car to me.

With only 25,000 miles on it, I took it to the dealer where it was purchased. He told me that everything checked out, and he told me lots of folks would like to have a 1995 Camry that was still cherry.

I hope to keep this vehicle for many years. It has better acceleration than my Honda Civic, and is roomy and very quiet.

1995 Toyota Camry LE American Edition 2.2 5S-FE 4 cylinder

Summary:

The IDEAL first car!

Faults:

- Passenger side CV joint (was bad when we first bought it).

- Exhaust leak on flex pipe (common problem, was already leaking when we first bought it, but got progressively louder over time).

- Front-right brake recently started sticking.

My trunk lid also doesn't stay open by itself, I'm not sure if that's a problem, or if all Camrys do it (or at least the ones with factory spoilers), but it's definitely an inconvenience to have the trunk lid come slamming down on your head when you're trying to reach stuff towards the back of the trunk.

General Comments:

My Grandma originally bought the car as a temporary one, when her PT Cruiser died in October of '09, and then she gave it to me when she got a new car earlier this year, and I couldn't ask for a better first car!

It's gone 15,000 miles since we got it, without a change of neither oil or spark plugs, (which I intend on changing ASAP) and it still runs fine.

Compared to other Japanese cars, and even some American ones (That means you, Chrysler!), this car is ROCK SOLID. My Grandma hit a buck going 50MPH with it last winter, and all it did was break the grille, and put a fist-sized dent in the hood.

The car is a tank in the snow; you could almost swear that you were driving a 4X4.

The 2.2 5S-FE 4 cylinder engine is very reliable, and very easy to work on, but I find it a little small for a car this size. It sounds really good, though!

I've seen some negative remarks about the handling of these cars in other reviews, but I'm not really sure what they mean, I think it handles great! Not to mention that body roll is virtually nonexistent.

The interior is really roomy, and comfortable; with just about every surface being padded. My only complaint being the cup holders - they're too close to the shifter, and they're too small to hold anything with bigger around of the base than a can.

One of my favorite things about this car is the stereo - for a stock 4-speaker stereo, it really KICKS!!

The car's also got great storage space; I can fit my 26" mountain bike in the trunk if the rear seats are folded down!

Overall, it's a great car, and I'd definitely get another Toyota, given the opportunity.
