1987 Toyota Corolla FX

Summary:

Greatest Value/Quality/Size Car EVER!

Faults:

Sections of exhaust piping had to be replaced several times (not very expensive).

Rust had formed on all of the wheel wells.

General Comments:

This was a phenomenal car.

I put approximately 30,000 miles per year on this car and barely had any problems.

The gas mileage was excellent (30+ mpg city/40+ mpg highway).

I was able to reach speeds in excess of 110 mph on the highway (this is NOT recommended) without making any modifications to the car and, at one time, maintained a speed of 95 mph (also NOT recommended) for 4 hours straight without any problems whatsoever.

My baby could fly.

I have never (and I really mean never) seen a car handle better in the snow.

The car is very spacious both in the front and in the back. There isn't much room in the 'trunk' as most of the room has been allocated to the driver/passenger seating.

I also own a 1987 Toyota Corolla Fx. It has lasted a long time, but rust has gotten to most parts of the car (which I have repaired). The gas tank & fuel lines and brake lines have been replaced. Radiator was replaced. I replaced the oil pan myself. All due to rust through.

1987 Toyota Corolla LE 4 cylinder ,1.6

Summary:

I Love It!

Faults:

Alternator had to be replaced shortly after I bought the car.

Charge light stays on for no apparent reason.

Replaced fuel filter. (really dirty.)

Stopped up catalytic converter, had to replaced.

Next to replaced is the muffler, but pipes appear to be in good shape.

General Comments:

I bought this car cheap and expected problems. When I drove it home after purchasing it it ran fine.

But gradually, after several days it was hard to start, ran poorly, lacked power and the fuel mileage suffered.

I thought it needed a new carburetor.

It turned out the catalytic converter was stopped up. As soon as I unclogged the catalytic converter and replaced the fuel filter the performance returned. Catalytic converter replaced.

It runs great now!

I had to replaced the alternator. But since I have the charge light still stays on, and I don't know why. The battery stays up and all seems to be fine.

This is my first Toyota;all my other vehicles have been GM products and I wanted to give Japanese products a try. It is amazing the body and interior is almost like new and it is 18 years old. No rust at all or faded paint.

And it runs good to be old. I am pleased with my purchase.

1987 Toyota Corolla LE 1.6 carburated

Summary:

This Car Has Potential

Faults:

Alternator went out 2 days after I got the car.

It "floods out frequently and did not get very good gas mileage for a 4 cylinder engine. It ran rough.

Turns out the spark plugs were bad. I replaced them and the wires.

That improved it greatly.

Needs exhaust system.

General Comments:

I bought this car 2 weeks ago for a mere $300.The body and interior are almost like new. It really shines up after I clean it!

I know the mileage is high--187,200 to be exact, but I have read other reviews here about them lasting much longer than this and other people talk about how great Toyotas are. This is my first Toyota. I could not resist it for the price, but of course I anticipate problems.

It now runs good and drives O.K.

It does not burn oil or transmission fluid, that is the main thing!

1987 Toyota Corolla LE 1.6L

Summary:

Might be a good car after the problems are fixed

Faults:

Alternator went out. New one did not cost that much --$78.

I purchased new spark plugs and wires-$22.

Clicking sound can be heard when cutting the wheel.

Sometimes it is hard to start and frequently"floods out."I suspect carburetor problems.

General Comments:

I bought this beautiful car just two weeks ago for only $300!I mean, the body and trim are almost like new. No rust, dents, tears in the seats, cracks in dash, ect. After cleaning it up it shines up like a new penny!

I read the reviews here about these cars and it influenced me to buy it. I could not resist it for the price, but I did anticipate some problems.

However it burns no oil or tranny fluid;that's the main thing. The engine is clean. But it often floods out. I can go a few miles, shut it off and it will turn over, but not start. The odor of gas is strong. I think it is flooding out somehow -- but after 10 minutes it will start. This is the only problem with it right now. Wish I could fix it!

This is a real nice car and would be a pleasure to drive if I can get the problem fixed.

My local parts store told me these cars can last up to 250,000 miles and sometimes more!

I am not going to give up on it -I plan to get a good mechanic to fix it.

This morning it started fine. It is unpredictable as to when it will "flood out."

I know it is high mileage -- 187,200 to be exact, but I feel it was worth the price. Someone I know has one just like it and it has 260,000 miles and is still going strong. Also my mail carrier has one like it and he has delivered the mail in it the past 5 years.

I have not installed the spark plugs yet, but I hope it will improve it. The car is 18 years old yet the body and interior is almost like new. Maybe that is a clue that it was taken care of.

Before I bought this car I considered purchasing an Oldsmobile Achieva. But after reading the reviews of other reviewers here I changed my mind.

It is a 1987 Toyota Corolla, 4 door two-tone silver and gray,4 cyl.,1.6L.
