1995 Toyota Corolla DX

Summary:

Reliable, but nothing more!!!

Faults:

Alternator went at 100,000 miles (as I was told).

Bearings began squeaking at 140k (never fixed).

Interior passenger door handle broke off at 160k.

Starter was replaced at 170k.

A/C has never worked.

Amber/corner lights also have never worked.

General Comments:

An extremely reliable car, but not a lot more! You will get what you should expect with a Corolla.

My problem with the corolla is its extreme lack of stability! Particularly on the freeway, I can't say I feel safe in this car. And when its raining outside I find myself driving like a grandmother. My head almost touching the windshield desperately trying to spot any upcoming puddles of water to avoid the frightening feeling of hydroplaning.

Uhm, a set of new (er) tires will help alleviate your problems...it's not rocket science!

Oh; I have a 1993 Geo Prizm (which is the same thing as your Corolla) and I love my little car. I call it 'the road warrior.' I don't have any problems in the rain or interstate.

LMAO! You mean you buy an 8 year old car, own it for 4 years, drive 70,000 miles and cry about basic repairs and being 'scared' on the freeway... wow... get a new car next time.

1995 Toyota Corolla DX 1.8L I4

Summary:

Perfect commuter car if bought used

Faults:

Timing belt needed to be replaced (137000 miles). I know it's a maintenance item, but it's relatively expensive for an economy car like this - I wish it came with a timing chain as in the 1998+ models.

Rear passenger door lock does not operate with the driver door switch. Manual operation works.

Windshield wiper nozzle was clogged when I bought the car.

Head and tail lights burnt out a couple of times.

Reverse does not work for a tape in the cassette player. I put the other side in and use fast-forward.

Front end squeaks now (at 155000 miles). Was told it was due to a bearing or some bent part in the bearing that was rubbing against something else. Mechanic said it was safe to drive and that it was not the struts or the suspension.

General Comments:

Bought this car at 137000 miles, now has 155000 miles and feels like it would last another 100k miles.

The interior is somewhat noisy, but I hear from other people that Honda Civics are worse than this car. It's an economy get-around-town car, so personally I am not too bothered by it.

My best feature about this car is its light weight and excellent brakes. Car can stop within any distance if necessary.

Steering is light and responsive. The interior is comfortable for short journeys, but I had a back ache for the first month after buying the car. Got used to the discomfort after that.

Very good on gas, 27 MPG+ in all city driving. Small gas tank too, so very easy on the wallet.

Heat, AC and all electrical accessories are working perfectly even at this mileage unlike many American cars. This alone is worth the extra price you pay initially.

I feel very confident in being able to drive this car anywhere. Unless I trade it in, I could keep this car for another five years without major maintenance.

The noise from the front wheel bearing is not going to get any better, and is a warning sign that the part needs to be replaced. I have a '96 with 146k, and just had both of mine done, a whole lot quieter now.

Summary:

Best non-problematic car if treated with care

Faults:

This car was purchased brand new, my grandfather actually purchased it back in 95. Due to his condition, he could no longer drive in 2002. The car at this time only had 19,000km, which is ridiculously low. Therefore, he passed the car on to me.

Ever since, the car has been nothing, but joy. The little thing has been a trouble free car considering it's still new, with only 60,000km on it right now. My grandmother always said however you treat a car, is how the car will treat you. The only thing that we replace was the battery twice due to the car sitting in one spot all the time, now it need a tune up.

General Comments:

For those of you who wants a non problematic car, don't waste more time searching. Honestly, this is the best car for you money. My uncle, a mechanic was telling me a corolla, don't remember the year exactly, came in the other day with no word of a lie with 700,000km on the original engine. Do you believe that on a four banger? Amazing!! All this being said, it's an amazing car!

By the way, does anyone know the bolt pattern of the rim on this car, I believe it's 4 by 100. Let me know anyone. Thanks.
