1996 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 Liter

Summary:

A great value for an imported German designed car from Mexico

Faults:

Driver side door lock fell out at 70000 miles.

Coolant hose coupling on back of cylinder head leak at 85000 miles.

A/C compressor failed at 87000 miles, got one at junk yard for $50.00 and good as new.

General Comments:

Got this car from a repossession sale and was the first VW I've ever owned.

For the cost of this car, its been a great deal. It handles great for a four door sedan and gets great gas mileage.

For those mechanically inclined and can keep up with all the little things that go wrong, this car can last for a long time. Proper maintenance is a must for these cars, but not as bad as the "domestic" specials out there.

1996 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0

Summary:

Good car for it's price

Faults:

Alternator Went at 65,000 km.

Starter gone at 90,000 km.

Drivers seat cushion starting to sag.

Body molding started to peal off.

Mufflers just went.

Drivers side power windows are only working intermittently.

General Comments:

Even with the list of problems that I have had maintenance coasts have been veary low.

The car dose every thing well for it's price.

I would have a hard time buying one agen as my Jetta has had fewer problems then my friends Jettas.

I have the same car. it is a piece of junk. how can you say it is a good car? look at all the bad reviews of this car, I can see that I am not the only one who feels like this. the thing that I hate most about this car is how cheap the power windows are. one breaks after another. i have never had a car where the power windows break. with a car like this power windows should be the last thing to worry about, after all the problems with it. I will never get another jetta again. in my eyes I think this car was a huge mistake and a piece of junk!!!

1996 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0L

Summary:

An all around excellent value

Faults:

Side molding came loose at about 50,000 miles. The same thing seems to be happening to all similarly aged Jettas around town.

The fit and finish of the interior is a little sub par, even considering it cost only 15,000 dollars. There's just no way to make a half mile of molded plastic look stylish.

I have had no other issues with the vehicle.

General Comments:

This is precisely the car I set out to buy and I've never been anything, but satisfied with it. I know people who insisted that to buy a Jetta would be the biggest nightmare of my life, but I'm a former Fiat owner, and I never had trouble with that car, either. I guess just like with people, a car's reputation can also be exaggerated bu a few people who've had bad experiences.

The inside of the car is a little small, but I'm pretty tall, and the Passat to me, really wasn't worth the extra money for what I would have gotten.

I've added several aftermarket modifications to the vehicle, and the car was very forgiving and easy to work with. Not quite fast and furious, but definitely a kick in the pants to drive. I've still spent far less than I would have on an Audi A4 and I can't say I regret it.

1996 Volkswagen Jetta GL

Summary:

German engineering gone bad

Faults:

All the side door moldings (except the rear passenger side) have fallen off. I have noticed upon reading the other reviews that this is a common problem with other Jetta owners.

Both the driver side and passenger side windows broke off the tracks and could not be rolled up.

The sunroof also broke off the tracks and could not close.

The car had problems shifting into gear. The entire transmission had to be replaced (luckily this was covered under the powertrain warranty).

General Comments:

I had convinced my wife to buy a VW Jetta because I had previously owned a BMW and we both wanted an inexpensive car with quality German engineering. The headaches involved with the poor craftmanship of this vehicle, however, leads me to the conclusion that I had made a bad decision on purchasing a Jetta.
