1995 Volkswagen Passat VR6

Summary:

I love my Volkswagen Passat GLX with its VR6 engine

Faults:

Front drivers wheel bearing repacked, and front tie rod ends replaced.

Front end alignment.

General Comments:

I have really grown to love this car; it's sporty, yet business-like and roomy, and fast enough to not be boring. Insurance is dirt cheap for this car.

1995 Volkswagen Passat GLX VR6

Summary:

I love this car!!!

Faults:

Water pump replaced.

Hard to close trunk door.

Poor antenna.

Had oil leaks, but fixed that for 35$.

Have strong wind noise in a trunk area (wagon type) after 60 mph.

Changed clutch at 195000,was totally my mistake (drove too hard).

Heater for passenger seat broke down.

General Comments:

Great car, great handling. very good acceleration.

Fun to drive. you can keep up with many sport sedans on this wagon. use down shifting for fun.

Go from 4 gear to 2 and you are first.

One bad thing-it can kill your clutch.

Very roomy.

A/c works like a fridge :-)

1995 Volkswagen Passat GLX 2.8L VR6

Summary:

One big lemon, pass on the passat.

Faults:

Electrical fires galore!! Blown fog lights, cruise control, air conditioning, rear window motors, side marker lights, remote trunk release, frequent electrical shorts- many not fixable. The dash needs to be smacked in some spots to illuminate it. The stereo only works about 25% of the time (after-market stereo since the original caught fire). Leaks oil and coolant (both need to be checked daily). Not a walk in the park.

General Comments:

Do not, buy a Passat if you are looking for a reliable car. It is FAR from it. In fact, being rich would help because it will need repairing monthly and its repairs are quite costly. Oil changes alone run over $30.

I've noticed a lot of reviews or comments on this website about the Passat, and other Volkswagen's, are not very good ones. But they almost always come from the USA. I'm in the UK, and I can tell you, the Volkswagen's here (and elsewhere in the world) are very reliable. I've had two Passat's, a 90' 1.8, and 91' 2.0. Both never let me down, even after 150,000 miles and 15 years old. No problems at all. Also I know people with more modern Volkswagen's, and they have no problem. What I'm asking is why do all the lemon Volkswagen's seem to be in the USA only?

I believe it's because most VWs sold here in the US are made in Brazil or Mexico rather than Germany.

This is much later than the original post, but what I can say is that even if the vehicles were originally produced with similar quality, vehicles in the US deal with much greater changes of hot/cold, along with snow and ice being a constant anywhere north of Oklahoma, and have more stress put on them than they do in the UK, due to climate and road quality.

My Passat was well maintained, but has had numerous repairs done simply from the problems caused by temperature changes. In NE it goes from -10 degrees F to 50 F in the same 24 hour period this time of year, and the car parked outside sees months of temperatures near 10 F in winter, and 90 F in summer. The reliability is a trade off that you lose when you get such a high performing car. The coolant and oil leaks are a serious nuisance, and there is always a gasket or pipe or hose leaking, cracked or just broken. I would not recommend a Passat. However if I had the chance to buy a 1995 brand new I would; I would just replace all the gaskets, hoses and pipes with aftermarket aluminum parts, and never have to replace them again.

1995 Volkswagen Passat GLX 2.8

Summary:

Good car, but too many problems

Faults:

1.Overheating - replaced housing

2.Replaced front brake rotors

3.Replaced front axles

4.Replaced fuel pump

5.Replaced water pump

6.replaced front bearings. front left wheel hub and right rear calipers.

7. Front left power windows are gone and trans is leaking and don't have money to fix it so I just fill it up.

General Comments:

Good car to drive when theres no problem with it. Has never left me on the highway, but as it gets old more problems arise yet a good car.
