2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8L I4 turbo

Summary:

A great family car, but don't buy it if you are a 16 year old kid

Faults:

The car's battery completely died overnight a few months ago, and when I checked to see if I left a dome light on or a door partway open, it was just fine. No lights were on or doors were open, and the headlights were turned off.

I scuffed my rim on the curb a while ago, and about a month later the tire went flat. The car repairman told me it was because of the rim. Why it took so long, I have no idea.

Leather seats look terrible from wear.

General Comments:

This car is an underpowered boat. It is enormous car (from the inside) with only a 1.8L engine. I drive it like it's a Mustang with its manual trans, but still, I should figure more than 15 MPG.

I would like more than 150 HP and 150 torque, and better acceleration. More speed would be nice, too. I got dusted by a '94 Toyota Celica.

The speakers are terrible. If DO go against my advice and buy this car, do SOMETHING to the speakers.

I have received a lot of abuse from my friends for having such a girly car. Don't buy this car if you are in high school. Or play football. Or have friends that would make fun of you for it.

See how much your football buddies laugh when gas touches $4/gallon one day and they are scraping coins out of their furniture to fill up their "macho" machines.

On that topic, there must be something seriously wrong with your car if it is only getting 15 MPG. Either that or you have not fully developed your driving skills. Believe me, there are far worse things for one's ego than a late-model "family" car. If you really wanted a girly car, you could have bought a VW Cabrio!!!

I am considering buying a 1999 Passat? Bad idea or good?

2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 4-Motion 2.8L

Summary:

Nice when it works, horrendous and expensive when it breaks

Faults:

2 Oxygen Sensors went at 50,000 miles.

ABS Controller went at 60,000 miles.

Head Gaskets needed replacing at 65,000 miles.

Driver side Window Regulator went out at 75,000 miles.

Power Window switch doesn't function properly. When pressing up, sometimes it goes up, other times it goes down...

Check Engine light seems to come on at strange times, yet the computer does not show what is wrong.

General Comments:

I would never purchase another Volkswagen. This car is highly unreliable. I had a dealer bragging about how the VW's are "solid" when you close the doors and I do have to give them that. It "sounds" solid, but when you look deeper into the engineering, the manufacturer took simple short cuts and put in cheap parts intermingled with the more expensive parts. It nullifies building a "solid" car when they are all held together with plastic parts, which has been my complaint about the car since I got it. It's always the cheap plastic parts that are breaking on it. Then, to pour salt in your wounds for buying the car, the dealer wants to overcharge you for more shoddy parts. They are very expensive to get fixed ($1000 per visit, minimum).

2000 Volkswagen Passat GLX 1.8Turbo

Summary:

I will buy another. It's fantastic

Faults:

Air Intake Sensor went out.

Replaced some hoses at 95000 miles.

Driver's seat wearing at 100000 miles.

General Comments:

We have had this car since it was a baby (30 miles). It has been an excellent car. The best handling, pickup, smooth ride, no alignment issues, the wear on the outside and inside is fantastic (except for where I have torn the driver's seat) sliding in. The car looks like new on the outside, despite being kept outside in the desert sun. One of the best features is how quiet it is on the inside.

The only issues we have had had been replacing the air intake sensor (which happened right after an oil change funny thing). This issue ended up being covered by VW.

Otherwise, we are at 104,500 miles with no issues and we love this car!!!

The engine still sounds great, every now and then it vibrates a touch, but even my husband doesn't notice it because he hasn't driven it as much as me.
