2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 4motion 2.8 gas

Summary:

Buyer beware

Faults:

Check Engine EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! at 103,000KM.

General Comments:

I recently bought a 2000 Passat GLS 4 motion because of winter driving in Nova Scotia. The vehicle is a very enjoyable ride with the exception of the Check Engine EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! that has plagued the car for several weeks now. Idling in traffic seems to set it off. I already knew about the unhooking the battery thing from previous vehicles to reset the light. I hadn't heard about the recall for the vacuum hoses. Airbox looks clean, Oil is changed religiously in all my vehicles (that's another issue: the dealer service prices!!!) no unusual smells... anybody have any ideas before I let the mechanic look at it???

2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Amazing car to drive, but I would have to say its my most terrible nightmare to own this money pit

Faults:

CV Joint.

Complete Electrical System.

Turbo.

Mass air flow sensor.

02 sensor.

Rocker panels coming unglued.

Complete engine failure resulting in rebuilding the engine and replacing most of the faulty parts which cost $4000 dollars or about half its retail price.

General Comments:

The car is amazing to drive - fast, easy to handle, and I love the tiptronic transmission. But the problems with the car have been too extensive to be worth it. The electrical system recently went out and when I say the whole system I mean it: power locks, trunk and gas buttons, interior lights including the ones that come on so you can see how to get into the car. The locks have been a problem and I now have to go through a huge process of opening, closing, and locking doors in a very methodical way for them all to lock. The display won't stop telling me to "stop the car immediately" and the service engine light hasn't gone off as far as I know of in quite a while. The turbo is great, but had to be replaced. Acceleration is decreasing, but it's still a blast to drive. I am sick of this car, but I love it too much to get rid of it, and if I really didn't want it, no one else does either; trust me, I've tried.

2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T

Summary:

Good car, very unreliable and high maintenance

Faults:

Oxygen sensor

Mass air flow sensor

Water pump

Front and rear Gaskets

Sun roof assembly.

General Comments:

Drives great, but very expensive to maintain

The dealer labor charges are outrageous and the local mechanic would not touch the car because he says "too many parts"

Your local mechanic does not sound terribly competent. My mechanic works on a lot of these cars and says that the 1.8T model is the easiest to work on. The only reason he does not like working on them is that the parts are expensive and the problems are usually pretty big, so the bills are usually high (though much cheaper than the dealer) and customers come close to tears when they are presented with the bills.

2000 Volkswagen Passat LX turbo

Summary:

One of my favorites, despite it's problems

Faults:

Message on the dash read "Low Oil Pressure" STOP!

Message on the dash now reads "Emissions Workshop" and the check engine light is on.

General Comments:

This car is comfortable and fun to drive, love the heated seats.

The cost of repairs is outrageous, I thought this car would last forever with little or no problems.

2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS 2.8 V6 30V

Summary:

Absolute junk with the only redeeming quality being the cool blue dashboard lighting

Faults:

ABS Control module at 63000 miles.

Front Seal and Camshaft seals at 61000 miles.

Front stabilizer arms constantly going.

Emissions Workshop! and Check Engine Light continuing.

Many electrical faults with lights and central locking.

General Comments:

Body rolls too much when going around corners - drives you crazy when driving it. Terrible design!

Very quick, but the transmission is jerky.

Central locking system locks and unlocks whenever it wants... including with you out of the car and the key sitting inside on the seat!
