1999 Volvo S80 T-6 In-line six,twin turbo

Faults:

Transmission failure based on dealer diagnosis & Volvo of North America input. Symptom was a 'Transmission Service - Urgent' in dash advisory panel coupled with an illuminated Engine Service Light.

Ball joints replaced under warranty at 30,500 miles.

Noticed a vent tube cut off below the engine to prevent snagging on curbs and trashing timing belt (a poor design on Volvo's part).

General Comments:

Rear visibility out of the rear window is unacceptable.

The car looks like a Honda Accord.

Inadequate thigh support on the front seats.

Buy an Audi or new VW V-8. Leave this one for the test pilots & repair crews in Sweden to sort out!

Are you sure you were in a Volvo S80? Like a Honda Accord? You have to be kidding. The items that were recalled were fixed and are expected with a new design. 99s with the recalls fixed are as good as 00, 01 and 02 which have few to none after early model changes. The S80 is wonderful. Go buy an Accord, it looks like a Honda Accord.

Actually I agree with the above survey about the look of the S80. The S80 highly resembles a 1994 Honda Accord, especially from the rear. Many reviewers (even in Car and Driver magazine) feel the same way. I remember when it first came out. That was my first impression: "it looks like a Honda on steroids." The mainstream design falls right in with everything else. Other than the alloy wheels, there is nothing particularly unique about the S80 as far as looks. Volvo's may have once been boxy, but doggonit they were unique and had character...prestige. Now they just look like everything else.

You have only had this car one month! Wait several more months and you will see how cheaply this car was made. I agree with the rest of the comments regarding the car as being less than average.

I have a 1999 s80 T6 and I love it. it has 102,989 and I have had it since the day it was bought. The only work I have ever needed on it were new brakes, muffler, do to snow and road salt, and minor burnt out headlights.

Don't Believe The Hype!!!

I have been wanting to drive a Volvo let alone buying one for myself. Then, my husband of 7 years surprised me with a 1999 Volvo S80 T6!

I really enjoyed driving the car, the smoothness and the comfort I felt behind the wheel made it more "fun to drive".

Our kids love it and are looking forward for me to chauffeur them to school everyday.

Thanks, hubby!

Power door lock motors failed.

Roof moldings lost finish and turned brown.

Brake rotors warped.

Interior moldings falling off.

General Comments:

I love the design of this car, but the build quality is abysmal. This is the most unreliable car I've ever owned at any price. Of more significance is the fact that Volvo and its dealers are in denial, and clueless as to how to set it straight. Do yourself a favor and steer a wide berth around this car on your way to a reliable Japanese car.

No, not a review from a Lexus dealer but from a lifelong Volvo driver on his 20th (and last) Volvo. I'm happy to hear that your example has been largely trouble free, however every major consumer publication and auto industry quality survey clearly shows my dismal service experience to be more the rule than the exception for this vehicle. Perhaps you're in denial to admit you've squandered $40K on a service nightmare.
