1999 Ford Mondeo Si 2.5 V6

Summary:

Stonking performance sadly let down by dealers!

Faults:

I bought this car with a FSH from the agents.

After only 4 days the front right shock BROKE! The aircon didn't work and after having it repaired under warranty, it still did not work (and still doesn't).

Various other small things have gone wrong with the car. The water coolant bottle cracked open, the water pump failed and all the auxiliary belts snapped (in close succesion) leaving me stranded on the side of the road on more than one occasion.

At around 156000km the engine appears to have reached the end of its life. It idles very strangely and occasionally backfires. There is a complete lack of power and the car stalls at various times.

Ford lives up to its poor name (even in SA) and the service leaves much to be desired. I was once charged for various filters that I was told were replaced (fuel, oil, cabin air filter, etc) only to discover that they were old filters and soime werent even there! There appears to be no Mondeo mechanics employed by Ford SA!!! They simply do not know how to service/fix this car at all.

General Comments:

Generally (when the car was working) this is a good car. It has lots of power with a very flat torque curve providing plenty of smiles!

It handles as if on rails and is very stable at high speeds.

Fuel consumption is horrendous even at legal speeds and seems to get worse as time goes by.

Great refinement all over, but poor service backing from Ford.

Ford Dealers in the UK are absolutely diabolical as well, I have got rid of my 1999 Mondeo 2.5 Ghia X and bought a Renault Laguna. The Dealers just look down their noses at anyone who comes in for parts for a car older than 7 years, they keep you waiting ages at the parts counter while they go for a coffee in between getting each part! Then come back and charge an absolute fortune for a rubber hose or a blower resistor, that's after its had to be ordered, cos they never keep anything in stock cos "It's a V6!". Get used to the drawn in breath and the finger waving "It's Gonna Cost You!" and "Come back Tomorrow"

I got SO sick of queuing for 45 minutes on one occasion at the parts desk to be told by some condescending, nonchalant prat that I should consider "Updating my Vehicle, because its 8 years old" and that Fords only have a useful life of "7 years".

FORD DEALERS ARE AN ABSOLUTELY USELESS WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT!

1999 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8

Summary:

A sporty family car with luxury comforts

Faults:

Nothing major - they had to replace an air bag trigger.

General Comments:

Lovely car to drive. Seats are really comfortable, even on long trips.

Road noise is high though with Firestone tyres.

Very user friendly radio/tape plus good air conditioner and effective ventilation.

Bags of room for the rear passengers and the boot is great - plenty of room for 4 or 5 suitcases.
