2002 Hyundai Elantra GL 1.6

Summary:

Fair value

Faults:

The clutch went at about 120000.

The wheel bearings, both front and rear, at about 130000.

General Comments:

It's a very roomy car. It has no engine problems. However some parts of this vehicle in South Africa are very scarce and expensive. The wheel bearings were so hard to find.

Overall it's a way better improvement over my FIAT. However I think I'm done with cheap second hand cars. Going to rather go for an older Mercedes, which I find much better, even if older.

1997 Hyundai Elantra GL 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Good value for money - reliable runner

Faults:

One week after I bought the car I broke the driver side door handle.

After about another 40 000 km the water pump failed on me.

Replaced brake pads at 140 000 km.

General Comments:

The engine runs quite and the performance is more than plenty for a 1.6.

The air-conditioner is a very good in South African heat.

Road holding is excellent with the 185/60/14 tyres.

Very good fuel consumption.

The body is a bit to soft, as it dents very easy.

1996 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.6 16v DOHC

Summary:

Reliability

Faults:

At 136000km I replaced the gearbox and 3 months later at 138000km I replaced it again.

Dif pinion keeps slipping out of place and sun and platenary gears fall out onto the road.

Everytime the car goes for a service it has to have a major repair.

General Comments:

On the whole I will never recommend this car to anyone and I will never by a hyundai again.
