1984 Mazda 626 GLX 2.0 Magnum

Summary:

This is a well engineered car by Mazda. It has lasted my family for 24 years, and maybe a lot more

Faults:

I have replaced and refitted most of the components of the engine in 2010, but not the engine itself; a lot of these parts lasted close to 20 years.

Serviced radiator; it was clogged.

Replaced radiator, A/C fan and relays.

Replaced A/C compressor.

Replaced A/C drier.

Serviced A/C blower and replaced thermostat.

Replaced power steering pump.

Replaced steering rack and joints.

Replaced wiper motor; it was moving slow.

Replaced alternator; it was charging low 11.56v.

Replaced check valve in carburetor.

Replaced starter.

Replaced all 4 shocks and cradle rubber on all 4 arms inner and outer.

Stabilizer rubbers.

All engine mounts.

Replaced water pump.

Brakes booster, junction box, seals in brakes cylinder on all 4 hubs, handbrake cables left and right not the center though.

Replaced seals on transmission, intake manifold gasket crank shaft lower and upper, distributor seal, speedometer seal, tappet pan gasket.

General Comments:

My dad was the first owner of this car; it wasn't his top priority. I got it from him in 2005, and since then these were some of the things I have changed. I'm not going to sell it or trade it. I love this machine; it amazes me more and more each day.

This 626 has never let me down, never shutting off anywhere, is always dependable and very fast; I can reach up to 100 km/h very fast, and steer it comfortably even after passing this speed.

The A/C is very cold and does not seem to bother the performance. This car is tough, and would withstand any bad treatment for long periods.

Some of these parts could have gone longer, but I wanted to have the car brought up to 1st grade, and it is something I'm very happy about.

1986 Mazda 626 LX 2.0 turbo

Summary:

A reasonable dream car!

Faults:

The usual maintenance jobs, the first few years, (brake pads, belts, hoses, etc...).

Changed the entire engine, (it began to consume oil).

Did a 'body job', changed some body parts because of my negligent driving.

General Comments:

This car runs like hell! Since installing the new 'turbocharged' engine, man I feel like I'm 'Vin Diesel' from the Fast and the Furious!

Lowered and tunned suspension, upgraded brakes, makes it fun to drive!

Only problems are there are no parts (like sensors, turbos, gaskets) for my model in my country! And it sucks!

1985 Mazda 626 L petrol

Summary:

This is not a good car

Faults:

Engine drive belt burst.

Air conditioning fan switch failed.

Engine was constantly throwing oil into the air cleaner housing, and also throwing it out of the dipstick shaft.

Engine mysteriously used to overheat - never found out why.

Front wheel bearings failed - these are very expensive.

Had to overhaul steering rack due to leakage of fluid.

Starter failed, fuel pump failed, velocity joints failed.

When I finally got rid of this car, it was emitting a 'whistling' sound - never solved that one...

General Comments:

A nice car to drive with very good handling and acceleration.

Seats reasonably comfortable, perhaps a little low in height.

Devastatingly thirsty car.

Not a very reliable car, something seemed to go wrong every few weeks...

Run from this car. I live in Trinidad and Tobago. I bought a 626LX 10 months ago; I paid $1,000usd for it only to spend almost $1,000usd in parts and repairs over the last 10 months. Finally I got rid of it two days ago. I got $900usd for it. Take my advice: RUN FROM THAT.

P.S. I am renting a Mazda 323F and it works great. But burns a little gas. If you can afford it I recommend it.

I currently own a Mazda 626 LX 1.8. This is a very good car and comfortable too. The car is over 25 years old so all those other complaints I've read are only obvious.

The only problem I have had so far in the last years that I owned this car are that the starter failed and the air conditioning blower failed, but parts are very easy to get and reasonably cheap, but the only permanent fault is that the car uses a bit of gas due to the size of the engine (1.8L). If you love speed, you've gotta love to go to the gas station OK... LOL.
