2015 Audi A5 S Line Sportback 2.0 TDi

Summary:

A near perfect automobile

Faults:

Absolutely nothing in two years. Do make sure you buy one of these with full service history - like any car, things get expensive on abused examples.

Minor cosmetic issues - it is a decade old however.

General Comments:

Audi A5 "sportback" (5 door hatch/saloon, not the coupe) is a lovely executive cruiser. I have had this two years with no issues. Seriously one of the best cars I have ever had.

2015 model in black, looks very modern even today. Stunning to look at and drive.

Inside the S Line model gets full black leather seats and al the modern features you would expect on such a car. It's very comfortable, smooth, quiet and fast as well when required. Or you can cruise steadily and get 50 mpg + from the diesel 2.0 TDi engine - probably the pick of the engines. The petrol's are not that efficient, and the larger diesels, although more powerful, aren't that economical either. The classic 2.0 TDi engine that has been around for decades is proven and reliable and provides the best balance of power and economy.

My car is manual, something of a rarity as most of the A5's I looked at when buying were automatics. Probably the reason though why I get better MPG than most and have more fun driving it! Definitely do not let a manual transmission one of these put you off - it's smooth and fun to use. You may be looking for an automatic with this type of car, but honestly the manual still has a lot to offer.

Why go for the Audi A5? Well if the A4 is too small and the A6 and A8 too large and expensive, the A5 is the perfect middle ground and a great introduction to Audi executives. I've never had an Audi but always drove German saloons (VW, BMW, and Mercedes); I can safely say they are just as good if not better than the rest.

Downsides? A little expensive to buy used even with a lot of mileage on them. Insurance is also expensive, but other running costs are OK. But if you want the perfect all round car, the Audi A5 in Sportback or coupe form is the car to have. I am struggling to find any negatives about this car, it has been well worth it!

Just wondering where the A7 fits into all of this? If the A4 and A5 are compact executives, do the larger A6 and A8 already not cover the luxury car segment? All seem very expensive too regardless.

The A4 and the A5 is basically the same car, same with A6 and A7. It's sedan versus 4-door coupe/hatchback.

2012 Audi A5 SE 1.8 TFSi petrol

Summary:

Beautiful

Faults:

Tank flap filler broke/jams.

New clutch.

Does like a top up of oil, but I wouldn't say excessive, but do watch for that on these cars, both petrol and diesel are known to consume oil. If it gets bad, an engine rebuild is usually needed as the piston rings (among other parts) will be worn and the car won't pass emission tests and will damage the catalytic converter as well, and things get expensive.

General Comments:

Stunning black metallic two door Audi A5 sports coupe. I love the look of this car.

I didn't pay too much for it either, which for an Audi, is rare. They are priced reasonably right now on the used market. Look for a taken care of car - walk away from damaged or rough cars with no history.

But get a nice one and you will enjoy it. It is a great car to drive, and practical for a coupe, seats two in comfort with plenty of luggage space in the boot or rear seats.

1.8 petrol "TFSi" engine performs great and manages a genuine 40 mpg or more on average. Considering it's petrol and the car's performance (0-60 in 7.8 sec and top speed is over 140 mph), that's very good. I'd avoid the more complex diesels, but there is nothing wrong with those if you find a nice one. You can expect similar performance with slightly better economy from those.

For a 2012 car, it feels very modern. Interior has all the electrics you could want, and the seats are very comfy. The car is silent and smooth on motorway drives.

An ideal German tourer or fun weekend car!

You must drive super slow to get 40 mpg from the 1.8 petrol. I had the same engine and never got more than 33 mpg. Mine was automatic though. Maybe with a manual it's better.
