1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6 8-valve

Summary:

Great engine and handling, nothing gives more smiles per pound

Faults:

Nothing, other than rattles and squeeks. The stereo reliability is a bit poo.

General Comments:

Great handler, and quicker than claimed, I think. Good fun to drive, bad news for license endorsements. I go through front tyres quite quickly, and they are a cool ton each - ouch! Economical, but interior a bit cheap. Perfect when new, but squeeky-rattly now. Dealers not very helpful.

1998 Citroen Saxo Exclusive 1.4 petrol

Faults:

1) Bad tyre valve from new.

2) Faulty ignition coil at circa 17k miles.

General Comments:

My previous car was a 106XR 1.4 (1994). The Saxo is more solid, rolls less on corners and is generally v. civilised. There are the typical French rattles from various parts of the cockpit! It is extremely economical - typically better than 6l/100km (50mpg); the performance is not that far off the VTR, which I test drove, and much better than the 1.1 models I've had as courtesy cars.

1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i petrol

Faults:

Nothing as yet.

General Comments:

Pay extra for a spoiler, well worth it, standard alloys are fantastic, gets plenty of attention.

Pretty quick off the mark and a lot of fun to throw around tight corners, sticks to the road well, perfectly balanced.

Have added a few things like blue neon indicators - not a good idea, been pulled over 3 times now and on my way to work this morning.

Great little car, keep the revs high or you could find yerself in trouble when you want to overtake, can take a bit of hammering - got 65mph out of mine in second!!!!! Don't do it though.

Getting rid of mine for its big brother.

Great fun, highly recommended pocket rocket, super little motor.

1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i petrol

Faults:

Nothing has yet gone wrong, braking veers to the left at high speeds, comes to a halt rather rapidly though.

General Comments:

Quick little car, would rather have a VTS, good for 128mph (down hill), can't go wrong with 2 years free insurance, worth putting the spoiler on though, makes all the difference, a real gem.

Just add a sticker like "Never take me alive copper" and you're away.

1998 Citroen Saxo VTS 1.6 16V petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Great car, quick, reliable and very economical as long as you don't give it too much. Previously owned a 106 GTi which is more aggressive, VTS probably aimed more as a family hot hatch (If you know what I mean). Recommend buying VTS or GTi, it puzzles me why only Citroen claim 0-60 in 7.2 secs as the GTi is just as quick, after all it's the same engine.

The VTS weighs less than the 106 GTI, I guess that will have an effect on the 0-60 figures.

The real reason is that Peugeot puts weight in the car (people) and a full fuel tank when they record tests.

Citroen doesn't.

You're both wrong, it's actually the gear ratios. The VTS has different second gear ratio getting it to 60 faster, whereas the 106 has to change to third to get to 60.

The result the 106 has a better gearbox for everything else except reaching 60. The Saxo can got to 60 faster. Everything else is practically the same.

Faults:

Only got the car yesterday with 5,000 miles on the clock. Noisy grinding brakes haven't yet stopped even though its been used enough for the surface rust to go. Also high pitched whining noise from under bonnet. Possibly alternator? Got to go back this weekend to dealer. Also bulb gone on dash.

General Comments:

It's the wife's car not mine and she loves it. Also all her mates do and their husbands are getting an ear bashing because they all want one. If you are over 6ft tall forget it. I am and you need a chiropractor when you get out.

OUCH!! Looks good on the drive, that's all I like about it.

Near side wishbone bush had come apart after two months.

General Comments:

Seems to drink petrol like there's no tomorrow!! Maybe that's due to the 130bhp conversion!! Dog's dangly bits to the max!!
