1998 Citroen Saxo x 1.1i

Summary:

Zut alors! French Flying Sardine Tin From 2CV Stable!

Faults:

Airbag light occasionally flashes on. Turns out to be a loose plug under the passenger seat.

General Comments:

I has an Astra and then bought this. OK it's an ex courtesy car, OK so its boring furio red (non metallic turning pink) But, I love the nippy acceleration, and the fuel economy, returning 38mpg regularly. It doesn't like a crosswind, and its no rocket when you get to the legal speed limit, but then this is a city car for the masses, not a motorway cruiser!

Its been broken into once and needs a new door skin, however, why bother at this price, pass it onto a dealer when you're finished and get a newer model (perhaps a C3?)

It was a toss up between this car and a Peugeot 106. Both cars share the same platform and engines, so the Saxo with its smiley grille and more purposeful appearance, grabbed the deal. That said, the Peugeot 106 (especially the GTi) is no bad car either.

When you're paying about £6,000 for a brand new Saxo (especially if you have just taken up Citroen UK Dealers no vat deal), you can't argue. The Fiesta is good, but has little thigh support in the seats.

Highly recommended cheeky French Flyer!

1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i 8v

Summary:

Cheap pocket rocket!

Faults:

No major problems. Little niggles are the main bugbear of this car.

Tappets need adjusting every 20,000 miles to keep it sounding sweet.

Interior quality is a bit rough with creaky trim and unsupporting seats.

General Comments:

A quick little car with a lot of character.

Cheap and easy to modify, with lots of aftermarket parts.

Handling to die for when lowered, although this does means you feel every bump in the road!

1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i

Faults:

Often when starting the car, I can hear this terrible rushing of water. I have taken it to a Citroen garage to have the system bled three times now, but the problem is still there. I have been told it is a fault with the heater matrix which can be solved by constantly having the heater on hot! I don't think so! Tell me if this a head gasket problem? Am going to the garage shortly for a test.

I haven't had a problem with the airbag light coming on, but I had it with the diagnosis light. Cost me £98 to have the software downloaded onto the computer to correct it!

I've only had the car for a few months and had fewer problems with my GT.

Hi, Thanks for your comment. My car is off to the garage tomorrow for the test. Over the weekend I notice a few tell-tale signs, white stuff on the oil cap. Out of interest how much did it cost you to get the problem sorted? I presume this did cure the rushing of water sound when you start the engine and more so when you apply revs?

Hi there I have had the same problem of running water to and white gunk on top of the oil cap, but no gunk in the oil at all, but at the same time mine is using loads of water has my head gasket gone???

1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6

Summary:

Good quality, cheap car

Faults:

Nothing, not one thing!

General Comments:

I have always been a fan of Citroens, and have previously owned several AXs. I love Citroen's unique styling - the Saxo is not so unique, but is gorgeous!

After owning an AX GT, I was a little disappointed with the performance of the VTR, which would surely be killed by its older brother!

I have had mine since January, and have had not a single problem with it. It's also a bit annoying that everyone seems to own one these days, and it is gaining a reputation as a bit of a rudeboy car.

Overall however, it is an affordable, sexy looking car, which drives like an absolute dream. I would recommend one to the vicar's wife!!
