2001 Citroen Saxo Furio 1.4i

Summary:

Very reliable

Faults:

Absolutley nothing.

General Comments:

Excellent car.

Cheap to run and good on petrol.

I spend £35 a year on the MOT and that's it! I have only had to pay out extra money on this car to replace the tires.

I would strongly recommend this car

2001 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6

Summary:

Potentially great fun car, yet frustrating errors

Faults:

The car used to cut out when turning corners.

General Comments:

Having had the car for around six months, it began to cut out when turning corners when coming down from speed toward the junction, never from standing start. This could well be considered pretty dangerous. I was told it was a electronic fault with the cars computer the second time I took it to the garage, the first time they could not find a fault.

However, apart from this problem which was disappointing I loved the car and it was great fun to drive.

The car is extremely nippy and certainly looks the part.

The interior is basic, but there is sufficient room in the back.

Interested to drive its replacement the C2, has a lot to live up to, if the torque and speed is along the same lines I am sure to be impressed, hopefully it is a safer car.

Recently this car has been written off after I was pulled out on without warning, I was OK, but the car was written off, this crash occurred at a lowish speed and I was disappointed how easily it fell apart basically, makes me question the safety of the car considering the other problem I had with it.

2001 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6 8v

Summary:

Superb first hot hatch

Faults:

The engine mounts failed at 36,000 miles, common problem, but I didn't realise it would happen that soon! Fortunately, covered under warranty.

Fuse box melt down caused all electrics to fail after 35,000 miles. Also covered under warranty.

Steering made clonking noise when on full lock, dealer fixed this by adjusting the cups on the front strut mounts, again covered by warranty.

Clutch went at 32,000 miles, cost £200 to replace.

Standard stereo doesn't like to play CD's when it's cold.

General Comments:

Despite all these problems this car is great! It's the most fun car I have owned.

It has superb handling and you often take corners slower than the car is capable of.

Performance is good too, 0-60 in just over 9 seconds, though the engine does start to get a bit breathless above 70.

If you enjoy driving, this car will not disappoint. It looks the part and has great responses, the drive is very involving and rewarding.

The steering keeps you on your toes and once you get used to the lift off over-steer you can have so much fun.

The gear change is crisp and allows you to make full use of the car's capabilities while accelerating through the gears.

The only let down with the drive is the brakes, it would be better if they were more forceful, though I don't think they are as bad as other people suggest.

Overall though an absolutely great car, I would recommend it to anyone. I'm selling mine this week, but only to upgrade to a VTS.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

General Comments:

This car is quite nippy and handles well.

My gearbox had to be changed as the laid shaft bearing went, had it replaced and this one is going now too.

The seats don't recline fully!

2001 Citroen Saxo VTS 1.6 16v

Summary:

A great car, but rubbish service

Faults:

Here's something that won't surprise you about citroen, I've suffered bad service and workman-ship from them!!.I picked the car up last week only to find that the mechanics had decided in there wisdom not to do the nuts on the rear off-side wheel up. This led to me nearly crashing the car after about 10 minutes of driving and a motorist behind me screamng and pointing at the back wheel. He then pulled over with me and said 'your wheel is about to fall off', and he was right. Needless to say I was furious and informed the dealer immediately, who said he would take action against the staff member, basically a fob-off. Had total dis-regard for the fact he could of killed me, and written off the car!!.

Cannot work the radio as it requires a 4 digit code, this can be acquired from the dealer who contact citroen UK. So far it has taken them a week to retrieve a 4 digit code off a database, when the original promise was a day maximum. Has anyone else experienced this?

General Comments:

Very quick car in it's class, explosive acceleration above 4000 rpm. I get the feeling though that if I drive it hard to much it will cost me big money, is this true?. There is a strange rumbling on the gas pedal at about 3500rpm, has anyone else experienced this, and does it lead to anything serious?

Yes.

If you drive it hard it will fall to bits, trust me. I had one.

18th Jan 2007, 07:26

Yep.

I had one from new for three years and it fell to bits. Body really can't cope with the stiff suspension.

That rattling is your center box on your exhaust. Tj.

28th Oct 2008, 16:28

I strongly disagree. Yours is an 01 plate so it doesn't have a centre box, just the pipe, and at 3500rpm that rumbling is just the power of the car making the throttle really responsive. No they don't fall to bits. 11 of my friends have VTR/VTS including me, spaced between 3 weeks to 4 years, and no one has had more trouble than a new alternator or power steering pump; all cheap things. Petrol's great and my VTS just keeps getting faster and faster. I love it.

About the only good thing with Saxos is that the parts are cheap, but with their reliability you need them to be!
