1994 Citroen Xantia LX 1.8i petrol

Summary:

High quality motoring on a budget

Faults:

Rear height corrector.

Alarm.

Boot lock doesn't work from the central locking unit.

General Comments:

The 1.8i is good on fuel, it has a very good ride quality and is very reliable.

1994 Citroen Xantia VSX 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Suspension leaks.

Electric seat switch broken.

New brake pads.

Electric window motor.

Windscreen washer level sensor.

Water in fuel filter sensor.

Squeeks from dashboard.

Rear electric window motor.

General Comments:

An excellent engine let down by poor build quality and very poor reliability of electrics. Ride is good and road holding good enough. A good long distance cruiser especially if the company pays for the maintenance.

1994 Citroen Xantia SX 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Hydraulic suspension pump and hoses have failed and been replaced. Lots of small things eg. mercury switch in tailgate, central locking, electric windows etc etc.

General Comments:

Lovely ride and perfect for motorway driving. Economical (and relatively powerful for the consumption) on fuel. But things just love to fall to bits on this car. Excellent dealer service (Whitechapel) but they do get to have my car rather too often for my liking. Would buy another if new models prove more reliable. When it's working it's unbeatable for the price.

1994 Citroen Xantia LX 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Nothing!!!!

General Comments:

Performance is outstanding, best diesel I have driven. Ride is shockingly poor, pneumatic suspension bounces the car all over the place.

Radio controls are difficult to operate at night. Dash has poor ergonomics. Controls on s/wheel a nice touch.

Nice. Best features? Engine and exterior looks.

Extremely reliable, wouldn't buy another because of sea sickness ride. Shame!

> pneumatic suspension bounces the car all over the place.

You need to re-pressurize or swap the spheres. It is normal maintenance and makes all the difference.

1994 Citroen Xantia 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Since a year the engine has had serious problems, when slowing down it just shuts down. Specialists hired by Citroen dealers have not been able to solve this, on bad days the car will shut down every time you release the gas before stopping. I have read on a Dutch car magazine web site that it is a known problem with early Xantia's and that it is an engine management problem.

General Comments:

When it works, this is a great comfortable car. The suspension saved our life once (I was able to swerve by a suddenly oncoming fire truck).

I'd the same ignition fault too and this was rectified by replacing the ECU during the warranty period. I guess a replacement chip (IC) would also solve the problem.

1994 Citroen Xantia VSX 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Turbo hoses repeatedly blow off water ingress.

General Comments:

A very enjoyable car, some minor problems perhaps, but let down badly by the apathetic dealer network.

I would definitely buy another, but perhaps not from the same dealer.

Faults:

Head lining replaced after 500 miles.

Turbo charger blew up after 25,000miles (£965 to replace).

Hydraulic pipe to front suspension failed at 43,000 miles (£250 to replace).

All suspension spheres replaced at 43,500 miles (£365 to replace).

General Comments:

It would be a great car if it didn't keep costing so much to repair.

1994 Citroen Xantia Auto 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Exhaust System full replacement, problems with Dash Lights (Fuses) and Door Frame came slightly away from Door inside (but fixed during normal service).

General Comments:

Get Air Con as an extra, vital.

Slightly understeers into corners at high speed e.g. Motorway Ramps, acceleration could be a tad better.

Seats can be uncomfortable on long drives as if you are tall, to get leg room you have to stretch to touch the wheel. Otherwise after 70,000 miles in 3 years its been a great car.

Citroen suspension really nice.
