1996 Daewoo Nexia GLXi petrol

Summary:

Reliable engine, but automatic gearbox not so reliable

Faults:

Minor electrical faults when car bought.

Leaking air con pipe replaced 56000 miles.

Expansion tank replaced (with second hand one) 55000 miles.

Brakes drums and discs replaced 63000 miles.

Expansion tank replaced (with second hand one) again 63500 miles

Transmission problem 64000 miles torque converter solenoid needs replacing.

General Comments:

Engine is very reliable.

New expansion tank not available, had to buy correct part from second hand spares dealer twice.

New spares difficult to locate.

No handbook or repair manual available.

No garage knows how much hydraulic fluid goes into the transmission.

Lots of extras like electric windows and central locking.

Lots of boot space.

Had to find a specialist to check gearbox fault, whole gearbox has to be removed to replace faulty part, no inspection cover.

No dipstick for transmission fluid level, only a plug on the side of the gearbox, when the fluid comes out of that (if you can get it off) then it is full. If you overfill it the excess comes out of the overflow pipe and makes a mess in the engine compartment.

1996 Daewoo Nexia GLXi 1.5

Summary:

Hugely Satisfying for my pocket!

Faults:

The petrol return pipe which sits under the drivers side sill split, but was very cheap to repair.

General Comments:

Performance is pretty good, with a 1,5 injection engine (General Motors/Vauxhall) the Nexia is quite nippy yet economical too!

The Interior looks like Grandads tweed jacket and needs a few pounds spent on seat covers.

Although not keen on Red cars, as this one is, due to being from the Blue part of Merseyside this Car gives you a lot for your money and is hugely cheaper than a Vauxhall Astra.

If you have a few hundred quid this car takes some beating for value for money!

1996 Daewoo Nexia GLI 1.5 petrol

Summary:

Not the cheapest to run and maintain

Faults:

Rear offside brake cylinder decided to leak fluid. New pads and cylinder needed.

Both offside brake pipes require replacing due to severe rusting.

Poor paintwork on bonnet.

Boot strip snapped off as I shut the boot!

Rocker cover gasket has developed an oil leak.

Front offside spring split and sheared off!

Poor door locks.

General Comments:

I was given this car from my dad as he brought a new Skoda and all they would give him for the Nexia was £500.

All in all, its not a bad car, but its getting to that age where everything starts to go wrong!

Various niggles, but my own pet hate is the poor door locks, It was broken into outside my house within seconds!

I must say that it's starting to get expensive repairing the faults that keep cropping up now.

1996 Daewoo Nexia GLi 3dr hatch 1.5i 8v

Summary:

Lots of car for you money

Faults:

Picked up the car cheaply because it was in poor condition. The cam belt had broken at 80,000 miles. (According to Daewoo this should have been replaced at 60,000 miles or 5 years) The owner had not had it changed and it broke. That needed replacing.

Also the head gasket seal was developing a slight leak on it, this held for the first 8 months of owning the car then it blew.

Both faults were repaired and nothing has gone wrong since.

General Comments:

Firstly you get what you pay for, so don't expect luxury.

The car is spacious enough to be comfortable.

It has perfectly adequate seats, driving position, control placement, etc.

The car is easy to maintain, the styling hasn't aged considerably and I personally think the styling is still on par with some of today's newer cars.

As a family we own two of these cars (a GLi 3 door '96 hatch and a 4 door GLXi '97 saloon) Both have been reliable, comfortable and still look good today. I would recommend these to everyone.

1996 Daewoo Nexia GLi 1.5

Summary:

Great drive and reliability for the money

Faults:

Handle on hatch snapped off.

Driver's seat has worn badly.

Lumbar support in driver's seat has gone.

General Comments:

I quite like the drive and the throaty roar.

Ridiculously cheap and yet has air conditioning and runs well.

Would have really liked to have had central locking, it would have made it a perfect car for me.
