1996 Daewoo Nexia GLXi 1.5 16v Twin Cam

Summary:

Perfect balance of reliability, drive-ability and performance

Faults:

Nothing really.

General wear and tear such as brake pads and tires.

ABS light always on due to dirty sensor.

Drivers seat has collapsed lumber support. Understandable as a huge fat guy had it for the 100,000 miles before I did!

Air conditioning does not work properly as it has never been serviced since the car was new. (According to history)

General Comments:

Extremely enjoyable car to drive.

Power steering is excellent and light without loosing feel of the road.

Feels very nippy around town and not a slouch at motorway speeds. Will easily cruise at 100mph.

Seems to stand abuse quite well. Constantly hand brake turning in car parks :-) has had no effect on car!

Does under-steer through very tight corners, but predictable.

Very good looking car (in bright red 3 door).

Engine sounds very deep and throaty when revved.

Summary:

Very poor build quality

Faults:

The timing belt broke after approximately 15,000 miles of use. Despite all attempts, Daewoo refused to help, saying it was my fault for missing the service (by 3 months). Until then, the car was fully serviced by the main dealer. Finally cost me over £1000.

General Comments:

Daewoo stress the customer service, until you have made the purchase. Then they're not interested.

Summary:

A cheap car, for a very good reason!

Faults:

The first Daewoo I purchased developed a leak in the foot well. Despite only having owned the car from new a few months, Daewoo refused to replace it from new. They did (eventually) replace it with a car returned from a previous owner.

I have had the car serviced from new, by the main dealer. The cam belt was replaced by them at the 4 year service. This belt failed only 16000 miles later, causing £1000 of damage. Daewoo have said I am to blame by missing the last service by a few months. They have refused to assist in any way. The customer complaints manager was dismissive from the beginning. He initially refused responsibility before he had investigated the facts.

General Comments:

The car now sounds poor and is running badly. This is disappointing on a main dealer serviced car, with only 46000 miles on the clock.

Not only will I not buy another Daewoo, but several colleagues have said they have been put off by the poor response.

Despite having written to the Chief Executive on several occasions, I received no reply direct from him. Even when I was complaining about the poor response from customer services, my letter was passed to customer services to deal with.

Well, I have little sympathy for you situation if you are one of those type of people who doesn't ogranise the appropriate servicing of your vehicle. If you had had the car serviced the fault with the cam belt would have been detected and the subsequent costs and damage to your engine avoided.

1996 Daewoo Nexia GLXi 1.5 petrol injection

Summary:

Disappointing - not built to last more than three years

Faults:

Had been a reliable car for about three years and initially pleasurable to own. However, the sun roof surround corroded to white powder after two years and it took several days to decide who was to replace it under warranty. Had to take to an approved Webasto (I think) dealer after Daewoo eventually found one.

Rust appearing under the paint in various panels and joints. Now the car has developed an intermittent starting fault (AA called twice) and Halfords cannot fix it because it's something to do with the electronic key/immobiliser - one week now, no car. Daewoo do not want to know now the car is out of warranty. In fact they were particularly rude. Halfords have not even been able to get a lot technical advice from Daewoo either.

General Comments:

Never again - it's cheap and nasty and the market value is now less than a ten year old Ford Escort.

If anybody is thinking of buying a Daewoo - don't!

Have just bought a P registered Nexia 1.5 GLXi, have driven 50 miles and it needed £11.25 to top it up again, so doing 15 mph, surely this can't be right? Read your survey comments and they all say fuel consumption good. Mine is twin cam, ABS brakes etc etc. Apart from the fuel consumption it is a dream of a car.

My 97 P Nexia is lousy on fuel consumption too. I understand that the engine is an Isuzu unit of middle aged technology, why didn`t Daewoo use a Vauxhall engine?

The performance is dreadful too, twin cam 16v - seen quicker lawn mowers.

Well all those who are not getting good mileage out of their Nexia, please please change your driving habits. Each car has its own driving style, so you'd better change it.

The Nexia has tachometer, so you'd better use it. Try to change your gears before 2500 rpm for better fuel economy. If you still don't get better economy, upgrade your engine oil to 15w 40, clean your injectors, make sure your tyres are fully inflated & drain your old coolant & fill your car with two bottles of coolant, & then fill her up with a bottle of water. This will give your cooling system the extreme cooling conditions which will help your engine not to blew your head gasket, as well as longer engine life.

Also, change your air filter after every 15000 kms.

Faults:

Minor problems. Fixed straight away.

General Comments:

A car is a tool. And all I want is reliability, comfort and economy. This car satisfies all three. 60-0 is more important to me than 0-60.
