1999 Daewoo Nubira CDX 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Looks well, but is a big disappointment

Faults:

The most recent problem is the automatic transmission is requiring overhauled. With only 31000 miles recorded this is worrying to say the least. It has yet to be repaired therefore with the lack of spare parts available, this is again a worry. Having driven only 5000 miles since purchase and now having a bill for #1500 (pounds) you could say running costs are a bit high.

Other faults include a problem with the front suspension in that it is soft and when going over a hump, the exhaust manifold strikes the ground.

Spare parts are a nightmare whereby I have been attempting to replace the off-side wing mirror glass, since September 2002. Service staff are as much use as a chocolate watch.

General Comments:

In general the Nubira is fairly comfortable, but does not handle well on twisted roads and the brakes are a bit on the soft side. All in all between the after-sales, or the lack thereof, and large bills I would not recommend these to anybody.

1998 Daewoo Nubira CDX Estate 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Walking is preferable to driving this heap

Faults:

3 catalysts due to poor manufacture.

Cam belt snapped causing engine to blow up, took 4 weeks to repair.

Had car back for 4 days when the cam belt tensioning bracket snapped causing engine to blow up again.

3 new front suspensions complete.

So much more that it hurts to think about it.

General Comments:

These cars have an excellent warranty, it's just a shame you have to have a shouting match with Daewoo any time you need work doing.

Service staff are useless and plain rude. (And this coming from someone who's used to Ford dealers)

If you have one of these make sure you have breakdown cover, I guarantee you will need it.

This was a horrible, horrible car and I'm so glad that I have a proper car now. (VW Passat)

1997 Daewoo Nubira SE 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A good runner, but a problem with parts and dealers

Faults:

Brakes needed replacing after 50,000 miles.

Dealer tried to get me to part with £500 for new brake disks, pads and a new clutch at the 60,000 mile service. Told them I'd wait a bit. Nothing was needed at all, so watch out!

Now got engine problems that are going to cost about £500-800 to fix. Problem is, no-one can do it because Daewoo UK are in administration. Be very careful!

General Comments:

The Nubira is a very good car. Fairly economical (~30-35 miles per gallon) but parts and servicing are a real problem.

As an update on the car above; I replaced it when Daewoo UK was wound up. I got £1200 for it after the car broke down when the dealer was test driving it! I was going to get £2000 in the part ex. The dealer, who said he used to work for Daewoo (or Halfords, I can't remember) said that the fault I had (according to him it was a dropped valve) is fairly frequent with Daewoos. I liked the car, but I'm glad to be rid of it. I got a Citroen Diesel Estate, which isn't as nice, but is saving me so much in running costs it's unbelieveable! Moral of the story is; don't buy Daewoos, they cost the earth to repair (and service) and only the dealers (or Halfords) will touch them!

If it had dropped valve, you would know about it. I had this happen once, and it locked the engine and it didn't go quietly. He was just conning you to give you less money in the part exchange deal.

I think the dealer fooled you. I bet the car could have been fixed easily and cheap.

In Romania these cars run lots of kilometers without big troubles. Lots of them have 2-300.000km on clock and still run.
