1999 Daewoo Nubira CDX 2.0

Rear wheel bearing failure. Car off the road for 5 weeks awaiting parts. No courtesy car offered.

Very unhappy about the availability of spares.

Have spoken with other Daewoo owners who have experienced the same problem.

2000 Daewoo Nubira CDX 2.0 16v

Summary:

Good for the price, but no cigar!

Faults:

Air con controls no longer illuminated (bulb?)

Safety recall for fuel line and filter.

General Comments:

As an A to B car, the Nubira makes a lot of sense. It has lots of equipment, a strong (if noisy) 2.0 engine and, with free servicing for 3 yrs, comes with peace of mind.

Although it performs well (0-60 in 8.8 seconds), the Nubira is not even close to being fun to drive. The suspension is soggy with extreme body roll, and the overlight steering has way too much assistance which dulls feedback. It doesn't even ride very well, with motorway expansion joints and sunken manholes sending crashes into the cabin.

Push it too hard into a corner and it will understeer strongly, with no driver interaction. Those brought up with any half decent European car will immediately notice the difference.

The engine is torquey and responsive but intrusively noisy over 4,000 RPM. It's also thirsty, averaging little better than 25 mpg with town use, and 30 mpg on a run.

Dealer service is superb! Not that the car has needed much attention. The 10k service was carried out in an hour while I waited, and that has been it!

1998 Daewoo Nubira SE 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A turkey!

Faults:

Gearbox is terrible. Gearshifts are annoying as you really have to push hard to get the car into the gear you want.

Brakes creak loudly as you come to a stop.

Loud creaking from rear of car when you turn.

Heat shields from the exhaust went after 6 months.

Steering is too loose and you really have to hang on hard with both hands.

Stopping distance from the brakes is inadequate.

Engine is very loud and thrashy.

General Comments:

For a car that is 2 years old, it runs like an 8 year old car. If I wasn't in a finance agreement with the dealer I would get rid of the car immediately.

1997 Daewoo Nubira CDX Estate 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Aalternator 5,000 miles (replaced under warranty).

General Comments:

Best equipped estate in its class - air-con, ABS, twin airbags, electric everything, 3 years warranty/AA service. Good motorway cruiser with 0-60 in 9 seconds. Nice load space - how about supplying cross bars with the roof rack as standard, Daewoo? Hope more service centres open, bit of a journey for many.

1998 Daewoo Nubira CDX Estate 2.0 petrol

Faults:

A number of small things on delivery.

Three head gaskets let go after just 218 miles. Returned car and asked for another. Waited and waited, no phone calls returned. Eventually told new car awaiting parts due to faults found at pre-delivery. Asked for my money back.

This took 3 months, 43 phone calls, 7 letters and small claims court papers.

General Comments:

Daewoo claim HASSLE FREE, POLITE, RISK FREE MOTORING. That is not what we found. We will never buy another.

We now have a new Renault Scenic and not a single problem yet.
