1998 Ford Fiesta LX 1.8 diesel

Summary:

A good, but slow car being a diesel!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car drives so nicely, the steering is light and handles so well for a small car!

The brakes are good, and the clutch is nice too!

Its comfortable and the ride is smooth.

However the engine sucks, its noisy and deadly slow. The pick up is slow from the engine and the engine is not smooth. It does have a lot of torque so parking is easy using the clutch for leaner drivers!

1998 Ford Fiesta Finesse 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Nearly everything a car should be

Faults:

Ummm...almost nothing!!!

Just the usual maintenance - replacement oil filters, fluids etc.

General Comments:

Looks can deceive - it does look as though it has just been slapped in the face, but in fact it is as fun to drive as a sports car.

The drive is perfect. It is comfortable, quiet and easy to drive - I learned how to drive in it for gods sake! It is also cheap to run and super-reliable.

But like with all cars, it has its flaws. In this case it is its looks, space and equipment.

This is our seventh ford - fifth in a row, and there is no doubt in our mind of buying yet another.

1998 Ford Fiesta LX 1.25 Zetec

Summary:

Good engine, but appalling bodywork and trim

Faults:

So far, I have no complaints about reliability or performance, however the build quality of this Fiesta is appalling. I do not expect the interior mirror to inconvieniently drop off just as I'm heading onto the motorway. All of the plastic trim is loose as well. The car has a decent radio cassette and is reasonably comfortable though leg room can be tight in the rear.

General Comments:

This would be a good car to have if you replace your car every couple of years before it falls apart, but for a person who wants a car to last then this is not what you're looking for. My previous 1988 Micra has been thrashed, done well over 100K and the bodywork is still almost 100% perfect and there are certainly no loose parts. On the plus side, the Fiesta has a decent radio cassette and is reasonably comfortable though leg room can be tight in the rear. Good on petrol.

The interior mirror is simply stuck on to the screen with a double sided adhesive pad, as it is in virtually every other car on sale today. The pads can, and do fail, and this isn't a problem exclusive to Ford. Just buy another pad for 50p and restick it, and it will probably stay put for the rest of the life of the car. Hardly a show-stopping fault.

1998 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.25

Summary:

A very safe fun little car

Faults:

The remote central locking does not work until stood next to the car at which point it would be just as easy to use the key, even after replacing the batteries and cleaning the remote.

The rear windscreen wiper appears to have an intermittent fault as sometimes it won't work and the next time the car is used it works just fine.

The seats could do with slightly more support at the side to stop you from sliding about when cornering quickly.

General Comments:

The car has really nicely weighted steering and the engine is really eager to perform, let down only by being a 1.25.

The cabin of mine is a nice light beige colour with wood fascia. This make the interior feel nice and airy.

Unfortunately, my car was wrote-off last week when a Transit van pulled of in front of it on a 60 MPH road. I walked away from the high speed crash with nothing more than a small burn on my arm from the airbag and a sore neck over the following week. If you want a safe small car this is the one to get.

I would get another Ford Fiesta, but I need slightly more space so I'm going to get a Ford Focus.
