1994 Ford Mondeo GLX 1.8 turbo diesel

Summary:

A lot of car for the money

Faults:

Rear anti-roll bar bushes, £6 to renew through a Ford dealer.

General Comments:

An excellent car with good handling, and good performance for a diesel, economy is also very good for a large car, at around 45 mpg.

The most important thing to remember with this engine is to renew the cambelt at a dealer every 30,000 miles, or else!

1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8 Automatic

Faults:

Electrical fault caused car to surge alarmingly when decelerating on motorway. Took 3 visits to the workshop to correct it. Very expensive.

Water leaks in both footwells despite replacing rubber door seals.

Central locking been repaired 3 times - has a mind of its own.

General Comments:

Apart from Station Garage Shepperton, all Ford workshops I have used are dreadful.

I have V-reg Ford Mondeo which I have had for 13 weeks. It has been to Quicks in Ashton (Ford dealer) 6 times, main problem was a water leak in both foot wells. It has just spent 10 days there. I got the car back on 13/09/01 and on Saturday we had rain in Manchester so I checked the car for leaks. When I took the carpet up on the passenger side it was soaking wet. I have been dealing with Ford customer care in Glasgow who were not much help. Once these people have your money they are not bothered about the problems you have with your car. I would never buy a car from Ford ever again, I would sooner drive a Lada.

1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Hand brake light tempremental.

Back passenger doors have to be slammed to close properly.

Unsure if alarm works properly.

3rd gear synchro worn.

General Comments:

Apart from the niggly things above it has been a good car which is at its best on the motorway, having said that it is good fun to chuck around. It is not very quick but not bad for a 1.6 I suppose. The only problem is the dealerships and the people who work in them - they are all very stupid.

1994 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Nothing major, only a sender unit for temp. gauge (10ukp).

General Comments:

Excellent car. Poor fuel consumption is the only complaint (24-25mpg!!). Mine's done 96,000 miles and looks and feels like 30,000 miles. An excellent value high mileage buy!!

1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Replaced rear exhaust section twice in 20K miles. Rear suspension rollbar links replaced (known weak spot).

Passenger air vent keeps coming out of dash.

Starter motor occasionally spins without engaging (known fault).

General Comments:

Bought car with 46K on it, have done 20K in 12 months. Mostly fast motorway work. Has never let me down. 1.6 engine is a bit underpowered. Hatchbacks better than booted models. Avoid any white or very bright blue models - they don't sell well (info from Ford main dealer).

1994 Ford Mondeo Mistral 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Pulling to the left, excessive tyre wear, replacement exhaust, front suspension bushes, central locking on drivers side, replacement of steel water pipes.

Water ingress in nearside, cured by replacing pollen filter and reseating seal.

General Comments:

After many attempts to cure the "pulling" problem, I have given up and will live with the problem until I sell the car.

I will not buy another Mondeo.

Have you tried realigning the subframe to cure the pulling to the left. About £80 from a Ford dealer, I bet that's all it is.

Its the best car I've owned every thing needs tender loving care

1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8 petrol

Faults:

I've had 3 concurrent months of misery. First, the drivers side electric window packed up (cost 200 quid). Next month, the clutch decides to give up (cost 260 quid). Lastly, catalytic converter died (cost 250 quid). Guess what, starter motor is starting to stick. This car has only done 45k.

General Comments:

I will never ever buy a Ford again, and the dealer service is woeful.

That's my experience with Mondeos also. Far too many niggling faults. I will never buy another Ford. They need to sharpen up the reliability of their products not just pay lip service to quality control.

£260 for a clutch change on a mondeo sounds an absolute bargin. Did you really have to change it?
