2002 Honda Civic Type-R 2.0 16v VVTi

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

After 9 months of ownership, this car is somewhat disappointing. I wanted a reliable, refined performance hatch. And in that sense it delivers. But it certainly delivers little else. Even the novelty of the dash-mounted gear-lever wears off! Honest!

The engine is sweet enough, but truly gutless. I know I'll have fellow Type-R owners shouting "but a Type-R can beat a..." at their PC right now, but let me explain! Until 6,000 rpm the Type-R has little to offer, we all know that. That's no problem, it's to be expected from an efficient Japanese VVTi lump. The problem I have is, where's the warp speed acceleration in the top end of the rev range? Don't get me wrong, there is a surge. But does it really get you to 62mph in 6.4 seconds? This car is so refined in it's power delivery and so bulky in it's construction that you "feel" like you're going nowhere fast. Even when the sensation of speed does arrive, it's time to change gear because you're in danger of bouncing the needle!

The handling is OK. It's not as good as my previous car, a Clio 172, but I had to get rid of that because Renault don't know the meaning of the term reliability!

I think that's the point I'm trying to make. The Honda is a well built, well balanced car. It's just so good at what it does, it's almost no good! I don't know of a manufacturer that produces, in the same price bracket as the Type-R, a car which is super-reliable AND super-fun (i.e. 200bhp). Can't we have both? An Impreza some may say? A fantastic car, but running costs mount up (Subaru recommend servicing every 6 months!). What we need is a genuine, back to basics hot hatch which is affordable, dependable and has that "I wanna drive it!" factor. Comments welcome!

I have had a CTR for the last 2 years and it has given me nothing, but pleasure, where else can you get near 200 BHP for 16 grand with great handling. Everyone still looks at this car even though it is very common on the road now. My boss has a Maserati and borrowed my CTR. His comment was that he'd wish he had purchased the Civic and saved himself 30 grand in the process. I have done 40000 miles with no problems save exspenive servicing and tyres.

2002 Honda Civic Type-S 2.0

Summary:

A wolf in sheep's clothing!

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

This engine just loves to be revved! It's like a puppy on a leash, wanting to be let free.

Very comfortable ride, much better than my Mondeo Zetec (although the Ford did have lower profile tyres). There is so much cabin room, and lots of cubby holes for bits and pieces.

The User Manual is huge! The wallet with other paperwork does not fit into the glovebox.

2002 Honda Civic Type R 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A high performance bargain

Faults:

Driver side speaker rattles somewhere near the door.

SRS airbag light came on once.

Some rattle from the suspension (could be my fault)

General Comments:

An excellent car.

Excellent handling on bigger roads - motorway performance is stunning. It's put much bigger and powerful cars to shame (BMW 330ci, Scoobies, Cossies).

You might eventually get tired with having to rev it to 7,000 eventually though!

Not brilliant in the wet/cold and on smaller twistier roads.

Drives easily - even my wife finds it easy to drive - and she doesn't like to drive.

Very practical - wheels not too big nice shape - not too boy racer.

No doubt it is a fast car, but I don`t believe that its put Scoobys and Cossies to shame, come on, its nowhere near these two in the performance stakes. All the same it's a very fine car.

Scoobies would leave a CTR easily their performance is on another echelon. I've got a 255bhp (slightly modified) S3 and it can just keep up with them after 100mph then at 125mph closes the gap and past. I looked at the CTR when buying the S3 but the Honda dealer wouldn't let me test drive it being only 21 so I bought the S3 instead albeit second hand. The CTR is a wonderful car and extremely well priced, but in my opinion Honda do need to include air con standard then it would be near perfection.
