1991 Land Rover Defender Hardtop 2.5 tdi

Summary:

Almost seventy year old design and still nothing beats it

Faults:

Drowned an alternator when deep wading (my fault).

Heated screens have stopped working, as has rear wash/wipe, but the car is 16 years old...!

Otherwise nothing.

General Comments:

Uncompromising wild-country truck.

Reliable, tough and solid.

Strides through town like John Wayne.

1992 Land Rover Defender 200 Tdi

Summary:

Noisy, uncomfortable, economic power

Faults:

The clutch is heavy.

A "donk" sound is made when changing lower gears.

Dashboard lighting will need checking.

Noisy.

General Comments:

I've only just purchased it 5 hours ago.

I love it now, but will I when the above has to be repaired?

I will try to do the work myself to cut down on costs.

I'll let you know later, when I revert with my conclusions.

The "donk" comes from letting the clutch out too quickly... I used to do that on my series...

That 'clunk' is a knackered half shaft - common problem.

1998 Land Rover Defender TD5 2.5 turbo diesel

Summary:

The best 4 X 4 X far

Faults:

Minor everyday things until now. Engine needed replacing ant 50000. Common rail burst leading to diesel filling the sump.

General Comments:

A 2nd hand engine with 9000 miles was easily obtained as there are plenty of Land rovers overturned etc.

Land rover will pay for some of the repairs if done at an approved dealership however tou need to put in a new engine at £3000 which is dearer than insytalling a second hand one.

An off road vehicle that cannot be beaten by anything else.

It will go anywhere and tow anything without a grunt and the TD5 models can nip on on road.

1991 Land Rover Defender 2.5 diesel

Summary:

Superb piece of engineering - flawless

Faults:

Nothing, despite hard on and off road use and a trans Sahara crossing.

General Comments:

Unstoppable, built like a tank, totally reliable, massive safety and road presence. Parts the traffic like a lion in long grass.

Hard to drive, lots of body roll, not very comfortable if you are used to road cars. Parts are big and tough so pricey. Noisy. Thirsty, but then it weighs a lot and has no aerodynamics. I am planning to fit a modern turbodiesel.

1993 Land Rover Defender 200 TDi 2.5 diesel

Summary:

A fine vehicle

Faults:

Replaced shocks at 100K.

Replaced front drive shaft at 150K.

Rear wiper motor at 120K.

General Comments:

It's loud and slow to warm up, a bit rattly and the seats are a joke.

There is a load of room to carry stuff and towing, although not quick, is always a pleasure. It has never failed to start and has always taken me home.

The handling is better than a Discovery in my opinion, but comfort is not an important factor in these cars. I've had it over 100,000 miles now and the best thing I can say is; someone will have to pry the keys from my dead hand!

I live in the very treacherous Silicon Valley in California and have owned my d-90 since new in 94. I bought the vehicle to end my old car problems and have had nothing but problems since.

The first major problem was with the parking brake catching on to the drive train when warm and causing vibrations and noise when stopping. Rover of San Jose fixed the problem in only three visits.

Between other little inconviences came the big one two years ago. In first gear going about five miles per hour on pavement, the whole transmission and transfer case broke and the bill for that was huge.

My d-90 has always leaked oil and one of the gaskets to the exhaust system has been replaced. I read all these stories of people who love their Rovers and after all this I do too, but I've had enough and it's for sale now.

I will never buy another Land Rover and live the Rover lifestyle the rest of my days.

2000 Land Rover Defender 110 County Station Wagon 2.5 TD5

Summary:

Great vehicle ruined by poor quality workmanship

Faults:

Rear differential was replaced, complete rear axle was replaced, now the transfer gearbox is being replaced, all in less than 2000 miles on a brand new vehicle.

Upon delivery the sunroof leaked and the front passenger door lock was defective.

General Comments:

Insufficient quality control at the factory, very poor workmanship on vehicle assembly.

A wonderful vehicle if it was reliable. Land Rover need a serious rethink about their quality control procedures if indeed they have any.

Well if it's any consolation, we too, over in the UK, have the same poor quality reliability with the Defender, Discovery, and the Freelander - not forgetting high service/labor costs.. a friend of mine recently purchased a new defender 90/2002 model on closer inspection. He has found 35 paint defects, a hard to select 2nd gear and a clunking transfer box.. us Brits do not have the option on Defenders of Auto transmission... in Conclusion.. you are better off spending your hard earned money elsewhere.

1983 Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon 3.5 V8

Faults:

New radiator, new camshaft kit, every engine orifice leaks, rain leaks in the doors.

General Comments:

Great fun to drive, no-one gets in your way, VERY noisy to drive, you can see over hedges in the countryside, takes 6 adults with their holiday luggage and 3 dogs (albeit at 15 mpg!)

The 110 Defender was not launched until 1984. If it is a 1983 then it must be a Series III 109. Look for leaf springs to be sure.

You are mistaken, the 110 was introduced in 1983 - for sure!!

The (Land Rover Defender) model was introduced in 1983 as "Land Rover One Ten", and in 1984 the "Land Rover Ninety"was added . That is the truth.
