1992 Nissan Primera eGT 2.0 SR20DE

Summary:

Great bargain car with loads of room and decent performance

Faults:

The following were all the case when I bought it:

Oil is leaking from a few places.

Weak window motors.

Clutch bearing whines.

Clutch has issues with reverse on occasion.

Since I owned it (mainly due to rough driving on rally-esque roads)

Engine mount slight crack.

Exhaust bracket worn.

General Comments:

Great performance / economy balance.

150bhp is enough for most blasts, but obviously not an M3 slayer. The engine can take a lot more though, and the handling is pretty good.

Although it may screech in corners it sticks to the roads like glue.

It has plenty of pull if you need it and can be revved hard (7500rpm limit). Holds its own against many cars and has run with friends' Civic Type-Rs before (though not keeping up for the most part - those cars are something else, but still keeps pulling towards its limit of 138mph - not that I've tried)

Leathers are comfortable though slightly worn, but it is a 14 year old car. Boot space is vast, legroom is brilliant even for my 6ft 2 frame. Can't complain with the interior and controls aside from lack of cup-holders ;)

Cheap to pick up and insure (£600 and £1100 respectively - 23 0yrs NCB, 3 points)

Note: Mine was labelled "SE" by the dealership (as well as the 2.0 eGT badge) -it is the dealer principle model with all the added extras and I love it!

Hi, I am the original poster of the review.

Done 7k since I got it in Sept 06 and it's still fun.

Fuel pump has gone it seems, but this was probably due to happen on a 15 yr old car getting ragged every time she's driven, with 98-99 RON fueling!

Walbro uprated fuel pump coming soon to replace that.

Still love her, still enjoy her and wouldn't sell her unless I left the country.

1992 Nissan Primera eGT 2.0

Summary:

I may just have found my ideal car!!!

Faults:

Bodywork beginning to look a little tired.

Slight engine knock on startup.

General Comments:

Having only just acquired the car, I can only provide first impressions.

I am pleasantly surprised at the performance of this car. It's seriously quick. It handles like new even though it's 11 years old this year.

The general condition is excellent with the interior wearing extremely well - what's more ALL the electric toys work!

The seats are supportive and comfortable.

This car is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

1992 Nissan Primera eGT 2.0 petrol

Summary:

An excellent driver's car

Faults:

This was our second Primera 2.0eGT. The first one we bought was new, but had been stolen three years later. Therefore we bought a second hand Primera 2.0eGT. This one used to belong to a car hire company and I was suspicious of it having been a stolen recovered due to the different keys for the boot and ignition, but it was clear on the HPI check.

Due to the history of the car it did suffer from some problems such as a bent wishbone and the CV joints had to be replaced. Also the driver's side electric window mechanism had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is a serious driver's car. It has an excellent driving position. Although it looks bland it is definitely a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Only problems with it are that the engine revs so high that there is no torque at low revs, which make it a bit annoying to drive at times. It would have been better if the steering wheel was smaller and had a lower turns lock to lock ratio.

You have supplied the answer to a question I have been wanting answered for a while now. I drive a humble Primera P10 SRi and have always thought that the steering wheel was too big and that the steering rack was too slow. I was hoping that the eGT would have had a smaller steering wheel and a quicker rack, but alas, it seems not to be the case.

How do you find the steering "feel" through corners and in a straight line? I find the straight line a little dead but it loads up nicely in the quicker turns... Do the wider tyres make a difference?

One last question, how noisy is the engine on the eGT? I find the SRi to be fairly obtrusive with a lot of road noise - I can live with it though.

Hey, I find your views on the steering wheel bizarre. I'm a very big guy, and I am fortunate enough to own a P10 2.0 eGT. It was a very exciting purchase, because these cars are very rarely seen in New Zealand. I find that the steering is a little unresponsive, and it was mostly due to wear on a spider gear in my case; a quick transplant, and it was fine.

The biggest problem I've had with my car is a miss on idle. No one can figure it out. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it. I've changed the crank angle sensor and coil, and other ignition parts, but no good.

Summary:

1992 Nissan Primera eGT 2.0 16v

Summary:

Fast, reliable and discreet

Faults:

2 outer CV joints needed replacing - approx £80 each for non OE parts, easy to fit apart from removal and refitting of ABS ring to new joints.

Handbrake cable snapped - rear RH cable required, £50 for part from dealership.

2 rear dampers required.

General Comments:

Oil changed every 6000 miles - no oil consumed between changes.

Car has a high mileage but doesn't show it.

Very firm suspension allows little body roll - excellent on smooth roads, however can become slightly skittish when driven quickly on bumpy country roads.

Engine needs to be revved to make the most of the performance. Similar performance to most normal 2.0 litre cars until 6000rpm. 6000 - 7500 is where the engine really pulls. 70mph achievable in 2nd!

Paid £2000 for the car and very pleased with it.

1992 Nissan Primera LX 1.6 Carburettor

Summary:

Better than anything else for the same money

Faults:

The garage I bought it from (not dealership) incorrectly tightened the auxillary drive belts breaking (over a distance of 15k) the alternator. The water pump also died. My carb is getting hesitant (a well known flaw), and I need a new radiator (too much 'tailgating' has led to stones removing most of the fins).

General Comments:

The car's been excellent. Handles like a go kart, and it's the fastest 1.6 I've ever seen.

Prices for spare parts are stupidly high and is my only real problem with Nissan. The spares prices need to be halved.
