1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Lighter, cheaper, faster

Faults:

Faulty alternator - the car wouldn't start if it had been left in the rain over night. Peugeot had 4 attempts at fixing the problem and in the end an AA man told them how!

Steel wheels rust and go yellow (but this can be sorted out using Wonder Wheels cleaner).

Steering wheel is ugly and plastic (but with no air bag, making upgrading to a Momo very easy!).

General Comments:

I bought this as a replacement for a 205 GTi, and it's everything that car was and more. The review in CAR magazine said it was better than the 106 GTi - for 3k less.

This car can do 0-100 in under 25 secs, which is as fast as a Puma 1.7. I just love humiliating drivers whose cars cost over twice as much.

If only more manufacturers would realise that we don't all want to pay through the nose for creature comforts - we'd rather just have light weight and performance.

It's a good time when you consider the price and engine size of the car.

1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

You've got to drive it to believe it

Faults:

Broken tape deck - fixed under warranty.

General Comments:

When I test drove the car before I purchased it, I only drove slowly and didn't push it too hard. I picked the car for its looks, it was only when I got home and put my foot down that I realized that I had just made an excellent decision. I find myself making excuses to drive somewhere. It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Yes it is a manual.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Hot hatch bargain. A grown up version of the smaller 1.3 Rallye

Faults:

Electrics - cutting out and refusing to start.

General Comments:

A superb car. The grown up version of the earlier 1.3 Rallye. More power and torque give a more forgiving drive. Eats any other hot hatch for breakfast. Plus other drivers mistake it for a Police car (It is white).

Not seen many 106 police cars.

Me neither. They come in a nice blue too mate.

They don't think it's a 106 police car, they think it's a 306 (which were widely in use at the time). The reason for this is the S2 Rallye had fully colour coded bumpers (no black plastic anywhere on the bumper); no other model of 106 had that, but some 306s did. Add in the fact that the wheel arches make the car seem slightly wider (like a 306) and hey presto, anyone who isn't really obsessed with cars thinks it's a 306 when glancing at it in their rear view mirror, in what may be less than perfect conditions/light.

1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Test drive one and prepare to be amazed. Do not underestimate the power of 106 GTi

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Handles wonderfully, goes like a steam train.

None dealer serviced at a company called Peugeot Ecosse who tune and service the car very cheaply and very well.

Add a big set of wheels and you have a car that will outhandle, outperform (especially to 70 mph) and look better than almost any car you care to mention.

Add to this bullet proof residual value, total reliability and reasonable insurance (if you shop around).

All in all a faultless car that I would recommend to anyone.

I am just about to buy a new car. I have been looking at the 106 GTi's and they seem to be arwsome cars. Would you recommend buying one?

To quote.

"Add a big set of wheels and you have a car that will outhandle, outperform (especially to 70 mph) and look better than almost any car you care to mention."

Bold statements, considering the cars performance figures aren't even that great and it takes someone who knows something about cars to easily distinguish it from lesser 106 models. It's a quick little car yes, but the 106 gti reviews here seem to be very excitable and over the top when praising it.

My 106 GTi was bought from new, and I lost over £4000 in 18 months when it came to sell it. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed every mile I put on it and found that if you know what you are doing behind the wheel, not many other people can keep up with them on the B roads. An excellent starter car for anyone with a genuine interest in learning what a "drivers car" is all about. Hope the 107GTi is this good!

Screwing around with the chassis on these cars instantly robs them of all that makes them special. That includes fitting bigger wheels. Shame.

As long as you don't go too big on the wheels it should improve overall grip. Lowering the suspension will definitely help the handling by making it more 'chuckable' on the bends with less body roll.
