1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6

Summary:

The best pocket rocket around!!

Faults:

Loads of problems with the alarm when I first got it which would go off 3 times every time I parked it before settling down. Only after 3 visits back to the dealership did the problem get sorted out.

Cracked radiator recently which was caused by stones hitting it.

General Comments:

This car is an absolute blast to drive, with loads of punch and handling to match.

It looks understated on the road, and other drivers regularly mistake it for a 1.1 or something. That is only until they are left for dust away from the lights.

Down points are the high insurance costs (£1200 comp for a 21 year old). Also you don't get much miles to the gallon booting it every time you drive it, but you can't have everything!

I appreciate the desire to zoom away at the lights, but is this appropriate in a (probably) residential area. It is possible to pay lots of money for insurance on a mid-engined 'warm-hatch' when you are 21. Will the interest last beyond 21.5 years old?

Is the car economical? If not and you are interested in racing at the lights, will it hold a candle to my '96 Supra? If not, why not buy the excellent 306 DTurbo for less money to buy and run. This car could be even bigger than a large ego - and laster longer without becoming bruised!

Good luck!

The interest did last long enough because I have now just purchased a Subaru Impreza Turbo MY99.

This is even quicker away from the lights as you can appreciate and your 96 Supra would not even be able to hold a candle to it. You maybe with me on a straight, but as soon as we see some twisty bits, it is goodbye I am afraid.

I do not drive fast in residential areas which is why I can afford to get insured on this type of car. I have now just turned 23 years of age and have fully comp insurance with protected no claims for just under 2k and I live in central London.

1998 Peugeot 106 Quiksilver 1.4

Summary:

Great fun if you can ignore the minor niggles

Faults:

The brakes are bad. My car has gone through three sets of brakes in 35k miles!

Full set of brakes (front & rear pads and discs) fixed under warranty in the first year after 12k miles due to warping and corrosion.

Full set brakes renewed after 35k miles (warped & one even disintegrated).

Remote central locking did not work on delivery from new. Car would lock and immediately unlock again (cycle round). Fixed under warranty.

Remote central locking (again). Would not lock at all. Complete system replaced including sensor and keys etc. Fixed under warranty.

Whist driving along in the city the acceleration of the car became stuck. I immediately removed my foot from the accelerator pedal but the car continued at @4000 rpm, picking up speed. I took the car out of gear and brought it to a halt. Switched the engine off.

Started the engine again and it would not idle at the correct speed. It was stuck at 4000RPM instead of 1000RPM. Fixed by AA and a can of WD40!

Stalling for no apparent reason. Just driving along at 50mph and it stalled. Usually would stall with low revs e.g. stopping at roundabout. ECU fault. Supposedly fixed by the dealership.

Car will not start when the engine is "warm". e.g. stop for fuel and the car will refuse to start. Faulty starting sensor.

General Comments:

Minor issues:

Stiffness ride.

Electric window switches are by the handbrake instead of on the doors.

Dealers are uninterested.

Plus points:

Great looks.

Great performance.

Is fun to drive.

Sticks to the road quite nicely.

Boot is a reasonable size.

Full beam driving lights are good.

I also had a problem with the brakes from the first day (bought 1998).

It won't start sometimes, I didn't fix it yet.

I still have the Quiksilver 106 after six years, 47K miles and can add to the list of 'whats gone wrong'

Sunroof has started to leak!

Engine starting problems 'fixed' by replacing the speed sensor (twice)

Engine still idles erratically (comments elsewhere suggest looking at Manifold air pressure sensor/ECU)

Needs another set of brake pads (annual purchase!)

Drive-shaft leaking through broken seal and was replaced (think I've broken it again though!)
