1999 Peugeot 206 GLX 1.4

Summary:

Nice car let down by reliability and dealers

Faults:

The CD Autochanger skips on certain CD's.

The passenger seat has locked forwards when someone in the rear pulled both levers backwards; I managed to reset the seat from this state.

The automatic windscreen wipers seem very insensitive to rain - I'd have preferred intermittent wipe or at least the option.

A/C causes difficulties driving this car in town traffic. It feels like it might stall.

Several noises from the dashboard and the rear of the car.

The Central Locking failed this year - both door actuators had gone.

General Comments:

It's a nice stylish car let down by reliability and the dealers.

It's very nippy in traffic; it seriously shifts when you push it.

The A/C is great in summer when the outside is 30C.

The CD player gives me the music I want whilst driving; the on steering column control is very handy.

After six years, more faults have appeared. The ultrasonic alarm kept going off, so I override it every time I lock the car.

Recently, it started "juddering", running very rough with loss of power. Two expensive trips later, a faulty injector was replaced.

1999 Peugeot 206 GTi 2.0

Summary:

Not the experience a new car should provide

Faults:

The central locking was 'cycling' making it difficult to keep the car locked.

The airbag warning light kept coming on.

The battery was flat after a 3 week holiday and 6 months after purchasing the car.

The radio would sometimes stay on when the car was left.

The car kept stalling; especially dangerous in heavy traffic.

It took a lot of letter writing to both dealer and Peugeot UK and some six months before I obtained some action; but it took over a year and a half before recurring faults were fixed.

Most of this work was carried out outside the 1 year warranty period.

Now you can get 3 years warranty.

General Comments:

Tacky plastic interior fittings.

I wouldn't want to purchase a new car again having suffered at the hands of both the manufacturer and dealer.

1999 Peugeot 206 GTI 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Fast, but very badly built and backed up by dealers

Faults:

The car was on order for six weeks, but the sports pack still hadn't arrived when I eventually found out the car was in stock.

The piece of plastic that runs between the headlights was a different shade to the rest of the car.

The locking wheel nuts had not been fitted.

There was a rattle coming from around the exhaust after about 100 miles. This was rectified by the dealer and I was told it was a loose shock absorber.

The central locking is now playing up at 10,000 miles and I am unable to lock the car at all, even from the inside or with the key. I have tried to book it in with the dealer but have been told the next appointment is not for a week, even though I am unable to lock the car. I tried another dealer but was told exactly the same thing.

General Comments:

Other than all the faults, the car is quite nice to drive, very fast and even economical if you don't push it.

The interior feels very cheap but the general shape of the interior and exterior is attractive.

After all the faults I will never buy a Peugeot again and wouldn't recommend one to my friends.

I recently got rid of my 206 GTi after 20k miles. Great drive, but I have to agree to an extent that the build quality is crap if you consider that you are paying twice the cost of an entry level 206. No effort has been made at all to upgrade the cabin. It may look different with the fake suede trim but it ultimately isn't and it never stops squeaking and rattling.
