1997 Peugeot 306 Style 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Nice first car

Faults:

Other than the usual consumables, this car never let me down. I looked after the car, always serviced. Interior plastics were cheap though and broke easily.

General Comments:

Sharp looking 306 was a popular 90s car and as my first car I loved it. Was very reliable for a Peugeot (usually they get a bad rep) never let me down.

Blue metallic, alloy wheels, looks smart. Loved the shape of 90s Peugeot.

Inside a bit cramped, but it was a 2 door hatch, can't expect too much. 1.4 petrol was fast enough while doing close to 40 mpg, great back when fuel was only around 70p a litre!

Overall I miss the simplicity of cars from this time period.

1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Dynamically superb all rounder

Faults:

Rear axle mount bushes worn (common problem with aging 306s). This is not as big a job as you'd imagine. A competent home mechanic would have no problems doing this.

Intercooler pipe split.

Passenger door check strap broke off.

It's been 100% reliable.

General Comments:

These things are an astonishingly competent all rounder.

For such an old car, the handling is amazing, feels secure and well planted at all times, with minimal body roll.

Performance is excellent, even by today's standards.

Fuel economy rarely below 50 MPG.

The boot is huge.

Negatives? As with most Peugeots, they have the stupid under slung spare wheel, which I hate. The mechanism rusts up from the road dirt.

Build quality, if this car is anything to go by, seems very good. It's now 15 years old, and everything still works fine. The paint finish is still good. The interior still unworn.

There has to be a reason why elderly 306s are still a common everyday sight on the road - they are just a damn good car.

If I'd known how good they were, I'd have bought one years ago.

1997 Peugeot 306 L 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Good chassis and good economy

Faults:

Nothing other than usual wear and tear, tyres, drop links, brakes, glow plugs at 86000 miles.

General Comments:

This car is not particularly quick but handles very well, did everything asked of it, including towing trailers. I doubt I will ever find a car as reliable again.

1997 Peugeot 306 Style 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Cheap affordable motoring

Faults:

Front pads and discs.

Track rod ends.

Bottom ball joints.

Centre exhaust section.

Fuel pump in tank.

General Comments:

I bought this car as a cheap runabout. It turned out to be a very good buy.

Had not had a 306 before, but was surprised at how comfortable and reliable it was. Only breakdown I had was when going on a long journey and the fuel pump decided to burn out; cost £20 to fix using a breakers yard (Peugeot new price £316). Had trouble getting parts from Peugeot, but found aftermarket parts to be quite plentiful.

All in all, a good cheap car.

1997 Peugeot 306 SLDT 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

So far, very happy with it, but I will probably change the driver's seat

Faults:

So far nothing.

General Comments:

I have only had this car a few months. I bought it from a friend who repaired and serviced it himself, so have 'known' the car for around three years. He owned it for two years, during which time, he fitted a radiator, and replaced most of the brakes.

The performance is quite surprising, but as most people comment, the brakes are terrible.

Fuel consumption seems good, as I am averaging around 60mpg without really trying, although I am not a foot-to-the-floor driver. Don't have any trouble keeping up with the traffic from a standstill, so I am not sure about other's comments about this.

Handling is superb. Some have commented about lifting off on curves and the like, this is because the rear suspension changes the attitude of the rear tyres, helping cornering, so lifting off should be avoided.

Comfort is good, but it would be nice to have the lumbar adjusters fitted to other models.

I was honestly surprised at the size of the boot for a medium car.

The pulling power is good too, as I occasionally pull a trailer, not overloaded, but definitely heavy when you have to pull it manually.

As for driving, I found that I can cruise quite happily up to 70mph without using the turbo, which I think helps fuel consumption.
