1997 Peugeot 306 SRi 1.4i petrol

Faults:

Bad earth connection on drivers side dip light. Condensation in the rear light lense (righthand side).

General Comments:

Super good fun to drive, nippy engine.

0-60 in 7.1 seconds, reliable, cheap to run. 47MPG (tested using motorway and normal roads).

0-60 in 7.1! I don't think so, not with a 1.4 engine, dream on mate.

1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Rattles in trim appeared almost from day 1. Fuel economy not as good as expected - 420 miles from £34 tank.

General Comments:

Only driven 7,500 miles in 18 months.

Looks good and AC effective in summer.

1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Wind noise entering into cabin from nearside mirror - now on approx. 8th mirror.

Fog lights full of condensation - both replaced.

Various rattles, in particular nearside windows and drivers door - possibly due to the low quality of the trim.

The wiper blades (front and rear) are unbelievably noisy. The front drivers side blade skipped across the windscreen without clearing the glass making driving unsafe in light rain; this did not occur in heavy rain. Wiper blade replaced yesterday by dealer ... but they fitted one 3" too wide (from a Peugeot 406) which fell off after approx. 10 wipes whilst I was driving at 70mph on a motorway! Blade replaced again by dealer today with correct one. Letter on its way to manager of dealership. Rear blade still a problem.

Drivers seat replaced 2 weeks ago - it had collapsed underneath after only 10,000 miles.

Mud flaps (front and rear) scrape the ground, particularly when carrying passengers.

Brakes screech - fixed by dealer twice but problem returns after approx. 50 miles. Brakes are very uninspiring and not positive feeling.

Faulty bonnet catch on delivery - fixed by dealer.

Dreadful paint finish - car delivered with paint defect and had to have 2 panels resprayed. General finish awful - runs in paint, etc.

Imperfect dashboard - small hole near airvents. Unfortunately did not spot on delivery.

CD autochanger replaced after 2,000 miles as it jammed.

Fuel gauge unreliable - reads fuller than the tank actually is.

Tyres have worn very quickly - expect to have to replace all four after approx. 14,000 miles. I am not a hard driver - in fact IAM trained.

General Comments:

Suspension seems hard when on bumpy roads at low speed but at high speed the car floats about. Ride is very over-rated in reviews etc. My previous car (Mazda 323F) was far superior in ride, and in fact in every way except economy.

Sporty looking seats aren't as comfy as they look.

On a more positive note, it is one of the best looking car in its class, with low insurance, good economy and plenty of street cred.

However, the problems and the positively dreadful, useless and patronising dealer, who's answer to most problems is "well that could happen on any car", mean that there is no way in this world I would buy another! Back to Mazda for me...

1997 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Window fell into door.

Airbag light repeatedly came on.

General Comments:

Excellent performer.

As close as you get to a 1.9 205 GTi although no manufacturer would dare make a car that close to the edge any more.

1997 Peugeot 306 D 1.9 diesel

Faults:

Air bag light malfunctioned. CPU replaced under warranty. Then both the fuel gauge and speedometer failed. Apparently a fusebox connection problem, but I suspect incompetence by the dealer.

General Comments:

Dealer useless. Warranty expires next week, and I will have future servicing done by reliable local non Peugeot garage.

Diesel consumption at about 40 MPG is not brilliant. UK diesel prices are astronomic at 66p per litre compared to 46p in France - saving £12 on a full 60 litre tank.

1997 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Other than a lot of wind noise from passenger door the car has done 25,000 miles in 12 months with no problems.

General Comments:

Great to drive and very comfortable considering the performance and handling.

Be prepared for big tyre bills. The front tyres need to be repalced every 5,000 - 6,000 miles and 25 mpg is about average.

GREAT CAR !!!

1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Wind Noise entering into cabin, trim not fitted correctly, fog lights full of condensation, various rattles - no doubt due to the low quality of the trim.

General Comments:

Build quality isn't very good. The engine is great but the gearing and turbo lag means it isn't particulary easy to drive smoothly. Suspension seemed hard when on bumpy roads at low speed but at high speed the car floats about. It has also developed a slight knocking noise.

Sporty looking seats aren't as comfy as they look. On a more positive note, it is the best looking car in its class, with low insurance, good economy and plenty of street cred.

1997 Peugeot 306 GLX 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Radio - firstly aerial then unit itself.

Remote key fob x2.

Numerous rattles.

General Comments:

Great engine and smooth ride but handling is over-rated. Niggly faults irritate and not expected on a new car. Trim & windows rattly made worse by the radio not working half the tim ! Dealer appalling - patronising, dishonest and too willing to fob you off or spin a yarn "they all do that sir". My last Peugeot!

1997 Peugeot 306 Roadster 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Nothing yet apart from when the dealer left the oil filler cap off after a service. Even then, the car kept running and there was no damage done.

General Comments:

A wonderful car - fun to drive, distinctive and comfortable.

Finding friends to help remove/put back the hard top twice a year can be inconvenient though.

1997 Peugeot 306 GLX 1.8 16v petrol

Faults:

Loose trim in passenger footwell.

Drivers door loudspeaker "died" after 2 weeks.

General Comments:

Lovely engine (from new 406 range), a bit lumpy when cold.

Trim level high, although a little plasticy.

Very good road-holding in damp conditions, although disc braked all-round (option) ar a must.

Don't know how I managed without Air-con before!
