1989 Porsche 944 LUX 2.6 petrol

Summary:

I love it, a pleasure to drive and own

Faults:

When I first got the car it had done less that 500 miles in the previous year and a 1,000 miles the year before that, so initially there were a few small problems. The secondary fan cut-out failed and since I was on a trip when it happened, I had to manually turn it off each time I stopped the car. This caused the bonnet release catch to be put under strain and it too failed. The two items together cost about £300.00 to fix, I had this work done at the local Porsche dealership. I also had problems with the alarm being over-sensitive, but the problem was fixed by a quick adjustment.

General Comments:

My car is a joy to drive and own. It is in mint condition and has a full service history and all the supporting documentation. Including all invoices and tax disks since it was first registered and MOT certificates since the first one.

It is a beautiful car to look at and has been very reliable and a great deal of fun to drive.

I am continuing to baby this beautiful car and was delighted to hear from two Porsche dealers that it is the best car of its age they have ever seen and with the lowest mileage. I am regularly stopped in the street when parking and asked about the car. On two occasions I have actually received offers to buy it, but the car is staying with me for the foreseeable future.

As well as being beautiful my car is fast and responsive and a real dual-use car. Driven like a sedan it is comfortable, quiet, economical and reliable. But take the sunroof out, roll down the windows and put your foot down and it becomes a real sports car! The first time I drove it the power actually took me by surprise. I pulled out to over take one car and ended up passing three with no effort at all.

My main comment is that these are wonderful cars, but need to be treated with the love they deserve. Regular maintenance and care for the bodywork and interior is money and time well-spent and my car is a source of endless pleasure. I love to drive it, care for it and look forward too many years of enjoyment.

1989 Porsche 944 S2 3.0 litre inline 4

Summary:

Porsche, there is no substitute!

Faults:

Nothing yet, although it's still early as I've not had it long. I've heard the brake calipers are expensive and prone to seizure - since they are aluminium.

General Comments:

The car is amazing considering it's 13 years old. It drives like a new car, it's solid with no rattles, and it cruises excellently down the motorway. It really moves after 4k rpm and it is very comfortable.

The only gripe is the speakers are a bit poor, although I've managed to get them sounding a bit better with my better head unit, as opposed to the standard one.

I wouldn't drive anything else now!

I don't like the Porsche 944. it looks like a Pontiac.

Not that Pontiac is a bad car, its just not a Porsche.

If you think ANY Porsche remotely resembles a Pontiac you need to have your eyes checked.

1989 Porsche 944 S 2.7

Summary:

What you would expect of a Porsche

Faults:

Gearbox.

Interior leather trim.

Driver's seat wear.

Rear compartment cover springs.

Noisy wipers.

General Comments:

This is a serious semi-sports car and looks and behaves like one.

Be very careful with steering while accelerating - may not have a rear engine, but it can fool you with rear wheel drive.

1989 Porsche 944 S2 3.0 16v petrol

Faults:

I've had the car for three weeks and the fuel pressure regulator went (£43 inc VAT from Porsche). Could happen to anyone I'spose. Other than that no problems as yet (Touch wood!).

General Comments:

This car looks the dogs! Superb build quality and very responsive engine. Like most 16v's it's peeky at the top end. Handling is excellent and you feel at one with the car. Lots of grip and good balance means no nasty surprises either. Take it easy in the wet though as it's still a RWD. Good brakes too and ABS is reassuring.

Interior good and solid with no squeaks or rattles which is good for a 10 year old car. Handbrake gets in the way when getting in/out of the car and it difficult to get in if you have got long legs. Steering wheel not adjustable either. Speakers a bit naff and have no midrange, even on good head unit (this car has the 'luxury sound system' option too).

0-60 time is good, but it really comes into it's own when out on the motorway. Watch your speedo though or you'll find yourself doing 120mph!!

Overall I love it. You know you have the right car when you gasp every time you come out in the morning and see it!

I also own a 1990 S2. I have to say that like the other guys I have fallen for this car. I have driven lots of cars and I would say this baby has the safest and most balanced handling of the lot. You can push the limits at just about any speed and on any road surface. Some of the others comments are a little strange though. I would say the lack of throttle response is the worst thing about this car, followed by the tire noise (road roar).

The engine has loads of torque and pulls strongly from any engine speed. Very impressive for a normally aspirated motor.

Handling in the wet is very dependent on having the suspension properly setup and the correct, same make/pattern tires front and rear. When all this is done the car is as brilliant in the rain as the dry.

The best thing about this car is the brakes. They are just unbelievably good.

Stand on the pedal at 120 MPH on a bad road and the car just pulls up like/better a normal car does from 50 mph. The seats are also incredibly comfortable, probably the best amongst German cars and light years ahead of the awful things the Japanese put in most of their cars.

How good is the handling? Well 2 weeks ago a guy in a Lotus Elise couldn't match me through corners I previously struggled to just about make at 8-10 mph slower in Subaru Impreza turbo.

This is a real sports car! Don't believe the hype and boy racer rubbish put out by people that have never even driven a Porsche.
