2001 Renault Laguna Privilege 1.9dCi

Summary:

Flawed

Faults:

The Satellite Navigation System has reported a fault and is unusable.

The ISO FIX seat bought from Renault does not fit the car - meaning the rear seats have to be cut.

The headlamp washers have broken.

The electronic wheel pressure monitors are unreliable.

General Comments:

I am happy with the performance of the 1.9 diesel engine, and it's fair to say that the car has a lot of standard equipment - but at what cost to the reliability?

2001 Renault Laguna Privelege 1.9 DCI

Summary:

Would not wish one on my worst enemy!

Faults:

Fuel injection fault light has been coming on from within one week of purchasing car. Dealer cures problem for a while, but it returns.

Car constantly goes into 'limp home' mode. However coming to a standstill, turning the car off and restarting usually cures this.

The car had the following work comp-leted under warranty

All four suspension struts replaced.

Rear brake disc's replaced.

Exhaust gas recirculation valve replaced (several times - lost count).

Climate control system not working in heat mode.

Bushings replaced in rear axle.

Engine turbo charger replaced.

After warranty the following faults have occurred.

Another front strut replaced.

All alloy wheels replaced. Changed from 17 inch to 16 inch due to high tyre cost and to try and cure buckling problem.

All 16 inch wheels now buckled.

Front left hand side fog light broken (not Renaults fault).

Front left hand side window regulator (electric window mechanism) replaced.

Within two days of replacing left side front right hand side window regulator failed.

Front right hand side door lock not working. Waiting on replacement. Currently locking manually with a screwdriver.

General Comments:

Great car to drive and handles well, but very unreliable.

Due to light colour seats have got very grubby looking.

2001 Renault Laguna 1.6 petrol

Summary:

French comfort and style

Faults:

Rattle from the boot area.

General Comments:

Was a very comfy car on long journeys it was a real joy to be in. You could drive several hundred miles in a day and still feel relaxed at the end.

It was totally reliable, the only time it went to the dealer was for routine servicing. They sorted out the rattle from the boot and didn't even charge for it.

The 1.6 engine was economical and it was just adequate for the size of car. The 1.8 or 2.0 would be a lot nippier and would recommend that engine size to others if they're thinking of a Laguna.

It was a lovely looking car and still is - the shape doesn't seem to have aged like some other cars.

The card entry system was useful as it saved having a bunch of keys in your pocket.

I also have a Renault Dynamique 1.6., year 2001, which I bought in Jan 2005. Having also experienced a noise in the boot it transpired the rear bushes needed to be replaced.

This was a bit disappointing as there was only 27.5k miles.

My previous car a Hyundai Accent SE ran for 7.5 years with only the basic maintenance require i. e oil, tyres, filters, brke pads etc. New owner is also very pleased.

In our case it was one of those tailgate piston things that had worked loose.

South Africa: Recently I became the owner of a 2001 1.6 Laguna, what a pleasure to drive. So far the car impress me more and more, fuel consumption is great. After 6 years driving a Hyundai Accent 1.5, I can clearly say that my Laguna is tops. Well done to the French. I only wish that I could afford a new Laguna II.

Crazy woman in 'voice' shouts at you for petty reasons if you have no water on your windscreen washer she shouts at you, and flashes 'SERVICE' on the dashboard.

Nice colour.

Very fast and always reliable.
