1993 Toyota Camry GX 3.0 V6

Summary:

Luxury car at Ford Mondeo money

Faults:

Air conditioning condenser leaking.

Wiper switch was broken when I got it.

I found one in a breakers yard.

Electric antenna mast doesn't go up all the way. About £35 for a new mast.

A bit of rust around RH rear wheelarch & windscreen top caused by poor accident repair & pattern windscreen being fitted.

General Comments:

Build quality is the best I've seen in a Japanese car.

Although the mileage is high, the engine & transmission are fine, neither using oil.

A bit unwieldy, but it is a large car primarily designed for the Americans. The estate is a rare sight in Britain & its exclusivity & twin rear wipers are very satisfying!

Secondhand parts are hard to find, new parts are pricey, but you have to pay for quality!

24mpg on a run, about 18mpg when towing my caravan. Ideal for towing despite being front wheel drive.

Engine doesn't use any oil, sophisticated transmission is very smooth.

I reckon that the build quality surpasses anything the Germans do & I would highly recommend the Camry, a very underrated car.

A reliable estate with great performance and comfort

Heater matrix - 110,000.

Apart from the above, nothing else has really gone wrong. v.reliable. its quick for its age and can easily out perform modern 'diesel' estates. loads of room, comfortable, all electrics. it won't let you down and is great on petrol on long runs.

1999 Toyota Camry GL 2.2i

Summary:

A comfortable good performance family car

Faults:

Nothing wrong with the car. Just keeps on running.

Remote locking only operates over a very short distance, about 6ft max, even with new batteries.

General Comments:

Quiet and comfortable with little road noise.

Good climate control. Adequate CD and radio/cassette player.

Performance is good for an "executive" saloon - brisk and competent; but not exciting - nothing like my previous V70 T5!

Depreciation is pretty grim, from £17000 at 6 months to £7000 at 2 years.

1993 Toyota Camry 2.2 16 valve

Summary:

Perfect cruiser

Faults:

Radio bulbs replaced, passenger electric window switch, cigarette lighter.

It tends to gets noisy in the cabin (wind) at high speeds (above 90mph).

General Comments:

The Camry is a very reliable car that just cruises along.

It handles superbly at all legal speeds (up to 70mph in the UK and 80+ on the continent) in comfort.

The seats are very comfortable and the rear passengers have plenty of leg room.

The engine is punchy enough and doesn't refuse to behave sportily if asked.

Have the car serviced regularly and will probably keep it for another 100K miles.

1994 Toyota Camry GL 2.2

Faults:

Nothing!

General Comments:

Everybody who has ridden in this car has heaped praise upon it. I just know that when I turn the key it's going to start. Very comfortable. I know people talk about lack of styling but I genuinely like it, it's cleanly laid out and well presented, much nicer than Mercs. I think on the strength of this car I'll get a Lexus.

I have a 94 Camry v6 and I do not have one problem with it. Everone who drives in it comments on how smooth and comfortable it is. The V6 engine just enhances the performance of the car.

I agree with your favourable comments about the Camry GL V6 1994. It's a beautiful smooth engine, lovely to drive (better than the 1 year old 2.2 litre I drive to work) and nice to ride in. It pulls my 16 foot boat and 5 people from Wanganui (NZ) to Rotorua and back again without any strain at all. The only adverse comment is the crack along the front of the dash board upholstery where the screen and the dashh board meet. Regards, Bill Simmons.

Just bought a 14 year old 2.2GL 16V.

109K with full history.

No apparent mechanical or electrical faults.

Air con working perfect.

No leaks from anywhere.

Recent 4 x tyres, clutch, rear shockers, full exhaust system, rear discs and pads.

Drives like a new car.

Inside is immaculate.

Metallic silver paintwork is showing age i.e. peeling lacquer in odd places, but no rust.

Paid £600 with 2 months tax and 7 months MOT

After driving and reading reviews, looks like I've bagged a proper bargain.

Will give update at later date.

Can I ask what the trim levels are like in the GL 2.2. I have a VW Passat, which has been nothing but trouble recently, and really want to go back to a Japanese car. A 94 2.2 GL has caught my eye and I'm curious as to how well equipped it is comfortwise. What are the electrics like in terms of reliability? The engine, is most of it accessible easily and so on?

I live in Jamaica and I recently bought a 1994 2.2GL 4 cylinder Camry. It needed a lot of work, as the previous owner did not take care of it. But since I fixed it up, man I tell you, the car rides so smooth, it's really comfortable, steady on the road, it literally feels almost new! I am beginning to think I got a really good deal; an absolute bargain!
