1994 Toyota Camry GL 2.2

Faults:

Nothing!

General Comments:

Everybody who has ridden in this car has heaped praise upon it. I just know that when I turn the key it's going to start. Very comfortable. I know people talk about lack of styling but I genuinely like it, it's cleanly laid out and well presented, much nicer than Mercs. I think on the strength of this car I'll get a Lexus.

I have a 94 Camry v6 and I do not have one problem with it. Everone who drives in it comments on how smooth and comfortable it is. The V6 engine just enhances the performance of the car.

I agree with your favourable comments about the Camry GL V6 1994. It's a beautiful smooth engine, lovely to drive (better than the 1 year old 2.2 litre I drive to work) and nice to ride in. It pulls my 16 foot boat and 5 people from Wanganui (NZ) to Rotorua and back again without any strain at all. The only adverse comment is the crack along the front of the dash board upholstery where the screen and the dashh board meet. Regards, Bill Simmons.

Just bought a 14 year old 2.2GL 16V.

109K with full history.

No apparent mechanical or electrical faults.

Air con working perfect.

No leaks from anywhere.

Recent 4 x tyres, clutch, rear shockers, full exhaust system, rear discs and pads.

Drives like a new car.

Inside is immaculate.

Metallic silver paintwork is showing age i.e. peeling lacquer in odd places, but no rust.

Paid £600 with 2 months tax and 7 months MOT

After driving and reading reviews, looks like I've bagged a proper bargain.

Will give update at later date.

Can I ask what the trim levels are like in the GL 2.2. I have a VW Passat, which has been nothing but trouble recently, and really want to go back to a Japanese car. A 94 2.2 GL has caught my eye and I'm curious as to how well equipped it is comfortwise. What are the electrics like in terms of reliability? The engine, is most of it accessible easily and so on?

I live in Jamaica and I recently bought a 1994 2.2GL 4 cylinder Camry. It needed a lot of work, as the previous owner did not take care of it. But since I fixed it up, man I tell you, the car rides so smooth, it's really comfortable, steady on the road, it literally feels almost new! I am beginning to think I got a really good deal; an absolute bargain!

1993 Toyota Camry GX 3.0 V6 petrol

Faults:

Front left channel of the stereo died. Er, that's it!

General Comments:

What's good? - Silky smooth V6. Quick. Surprisingly good roadholding for such a smooth ride. Leather, air, cruise, etc as standard. Everything works effortlessly.

What's not so good? - Thirsty. 26 mpg at steady 70mph. 20 mpg around town. Less with the air-con on. Best you'll ever get is around 30 mpg driving like you've an egg under your foot. Doors and boot feel and sound a bit tinny when closed. Dashboard and trim a bit too Japaplastic for this class of car.

Overall? - Painless. Despite the anonymous styling, several "Ooooh. That's one down from a Lexus, isn't it?" and other similarly knowing comments were forthcoming from people who I wouldn't have previously expected to even know what a Camry was. No surprise that they're very popular in the USA.

1987 Toyota Camry Gli 2.0 injection petrol

Faults:

At 74,000ml gear lever jumped out of 5th, costly repair. This did not happen to later cars of same model as a modification was fitted.

At 110,000ml the original battery had to be replaced.

At 111,000ml the distributor failed.

First (and only) bulb went at over 100,000ml. Exhausts and tyres have been the only other replacements, apart from plugs, filters etc. Occasional rough running about every 2yrs. Simple free adjustment to carb.

General Comments:

The dealer from whom we bought the new car was excellent - Llwyd Coed Motors, Aberdare. However they lost the dealership and Wilsons of Aberdare took over. They failed to find a simple fault and charged me for new plugs £43. Had to write to Toyota to force garage to refund money. Llwyd Coed had, in the past made the small adjustment required free and within minutes.

When the distributor failed, the dealer in Carmarthen incorrectly diagnosed fault and charged me for a new coil and ignitor, cost £400. The dealer in Newport found the fault and lent me a distributor to try. This has solved the problem. Carmarthen have promised me a refund for the parts they fitted in error.

Wish I could afford a Lexus.

Simple adjustment to carb???

Where exactly is the carb in a fuel injected car?

11th Feb 2004, 08:53

My thoughts exactly. How can a car with an injector have the carb refitted?
