1996 Volkswagen Golf CL 1/4 MPI 8v

Summary:

Underated

Faults:

The car has been great, but the clutch went at about 69,000 miles.

General Comments:

Despite what reviews say the car is quite quick. The book time for 0-60mph says 17 seconds. My car in stock form runs 0-60mph in 11s and does 115mph top end. Not bad 4 a 60bhp 8v 1.4 engine. It's suspension is soft, but bear in mind this car is more luxury orientated. It is a high spec CL with PAS, rev counter, colour coded bumpers etc etc. The car is very smart in appearance and very sporty inside and built better than a tank. It feels like a class above what it is. The seats are great and the car is reliable, quick handles well with a lot of grip and has surprised a few so called nippy cars. Not bad for a 1st car for an 18 year old student. The Mk2 golf is getting on and many are tired and worn out. Not many Mk3's are modified and have a very high spec be won over by the unique appeal of the Mk3. I had a bad smash in my car at 70mph and thank God it was in a GOLF!

How do you manage 0-60 in 11 seconds? That seems impossible. The best I've managed is 14 seconds... still better than the "official" time though.

1996 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V 2.0 16v

Summary:

Outstanding GTI, the last Golf to deserve the GTI badge

Faults:

I have had no problems at all with my car since owning it.

As with most VW and Audi's, if they are serviced at the correct intervals then there should be no problems.

General Comments:

The MK3 GTI 16v is a seriously underestimated Golf and is last Golf to deserve the GTI badge as the MK4 Golf has is to heavy and has lost the GTI spirit.

This car is very rapid 0-60 in 8.1 seconds.

With a top speed of 135 + standard.

The standard suspension does let the car down though, so I recommend some sort of upgrade in the suspension department, I have replaced mine with Koni Coilovers and it handles like its on rails now.

The Interior is very solid as with all VW's and you get all the electrics with the GTI as standard.

1996 Volkswagen Golf VR6 2.8 V6

Summary:

The engine note is worth it alone..

Faults:

CV joint leaked.

Tyres made themselves square because of bad shocks.

Oil leak from bottom of Sump.

Replaced Coil Pack, which I've learned happens to 99.9% of all VR6's. Bad lumpy running and poor power all fixed with a new pack.

Replaced starter motor, which gave up one day and left me stranded with no warning.

General Comments:

For a 2.8 it's not the quickest off the mark and the handling is on the heavy side.

But, once it's on the move it will keep pace with almost anything. I've seen off many a Boxter that has been surprised by superb 30mph to 100mph acceleration.

Generally comfortable, especially the highline model with heated leather and air con.

However, running costs are high and it's already got through more petrol than all my previous cars put together.

Totally agree with all comments. Starter motor packed up (luckily it was parked outside my house), and my previous car a Saxo VTS was probably quicker off the mark, but from a running start I have destroyed a bmw 328i (mine is chipped though), and I take so much pleasure in humiliating "boy racers" in their pathetic Novas, Xr3is, Corsas etc. Lots of petrol, but who cares when you can make a boxter driver have a look on his face as if to say, " I'm DRIVING A PORSCH, THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!"

1996 Volkswagen Golf VR6 2.8

Summary:

Nice car, crap high speed handling

Faults:

Bump Stops

Shock absorber

Tyre punctured.

General Comments:

Nice car really, really torquey, you can pull from 15mph in 5th.

Really does accelerate although struggles for grip in the wet.

Handles like a pig, especially on the limit where it wallows and rolls badly.

Built for m-ways though and will cruise forever.

Very long gearing (105mph in 3rd).

Comfortable faster than you average 'RST' (you know who you are - 125mph is that it!)

If you own a VR6, you should be informed that Golf have a rather crappy suspension. Try Bilstein and it will beat other car in the winding road. My 1995 VR6 handle better then my Prelude and Lexus GS400.

1996 Volkswagen Golf TDI CL 1.9

Summary:

Excellent car, but after 5 years - starting to wear

Faults:

Engine Management System failure light came on - got us worried - only to be told it was not a biggy and easily fixed. Apart from that and the fact that the dealer (Caffyns) lost our service book for three months, the car has been absolutely brilliant.

General Comments:

Handles brilliantly, lots of "oumph", and would not hesitate to buy another VW.

1996 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.9 TDI

Summary:

A well built, good performance economical hatch

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Brilliant car, originally purchased for motorway travelling. Good performance, solid chassis and excellent fuel economy. Diesel noise level is minimal. Worth paying a little extra for the TDi over the TD.
