"Expensive but reasonable quality, overpriced"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Strange very annoying noise emits from behind the dash even when fan is not switched on, sounds like some sort of valve/electric motor being opened & shut - continues all the time, BMW dealer has no explanation.

When started engine makes clicking noise, fan /water pump - even after service it came back.

General comments?

Mostly wear & tear, although I thought that about £700 for a "Service II" was a lot of money. Lots of noise from underneath, suspension/ hocks beginning to get old perhaps. I have to agree the seats are very comfy, even better than the new BMW's.

The clicking noise on startup is cold, dry tappets, should wear off once the engine is warm.

I think £700 is a bit steep even for a service II, you can get them for under £250 at BMW specialists.

I have the same exact noise as mention above.

In a way, I am kinda glad & relieved..

I LOVE MY 92 518i..its been with me for 3 years and has cost me almost nothing in upkeep..

If possible I will die with this baby!

I did have to replace the rubber bushings in the rear axis

but other than that, pure heaven!

What you mean lucky?

The 5-Series E34 is a very sturdy car, just because you might have had a lemon, doesn't mean all BMWs or all 5-series are unreliable.

I am from Bulgaria and I own a 1992 525i Automatic. What can I say...it's a great car!

I bought it a year ago with 140.000 Kilometres (85.000 miles) on the clock and I travelled to Romania and Hungary, plus normal everyday commute.

This car covered another 60.000 Kilometres in just 1 year!

The car now is with 200.000 Kilometres and still feel very solid and all the mechanics and electrics are in good shape, the engine sound nice when pushed and smooth at high speeds, handles like a dream, even better than my boss 2004 Alfa Romeo 166. The body is immaculate apart from a few paint chips.

The Bimmer is artic silver and it's got alloy wheels, it looks very good and still gets compliments from the people. And the BMW badges, just adds more status, even though this is an already 14 year old car.

I probably will upgrade to a 7-Series E32 or maybe the 5-Series E39 (530i).

Happy Motoring!

My experience of the noise when you start is:

Fill some thicker oil on it... 15W40... That made mine stop...

I recently purchased a 518 and toured the swiss alps,

the tappet noise is apparent after long downhill periods;

when again on the level or climbing uphill it becomes cyclic getting louder then suddenly going quiet for a few seconds

finally clearing after a short period, this is possibly

an oil starvation issue.

Has anyone else experienced this?
