Faults:

Throttle body needed rebuilding at 135K.

Air condiotining air mix motor failed.

General Comments:

This is a very comfortable car.

The fuel mix is controlled by the computer and dealers seem to be unaware of how to fix it.

The engines in these are very durable and overall they are good cars. Unplug the 8-6-4 harness and you are set for a long relationship. Watch the brakes and rust too.

The V8-6-4 gets a bad rap, but if well maintained can actually be a good engine, even with the deactivation system active. The best models are the ones with the dealer-installed manual override, so you can turn off the system anytime you like. With aftermarket parts and a couple of minor mods, the V8-6-4 system can actually work like it was supposed to, if not much better.

The reason why the engine was so horribly received was because it was too advanced for the computing power of the era, causing shuttering, and other uncomfortable experiences, which were too much for Cadillac buyers then. It's not as bad as the HT4100, as the system's shortcomings can be fixed.

This link describes everything you need to know about the 8-6-4 368 CID V8.

Other sources try to claim that this was the worst engine in Cadillac history and they are 100% wrong.
