1987 Chevrolet Cavalier 2 DR 2.0 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

The Cavalier the would not die

Faults:

Head Gasket, Starter, Replaced all 4 brakes, exhaust, and just regular maintenance.

General Comments:

This was the best car I ever owned. I bought it from a customer at the garage I worked at during high school for 100 $ from some old lady. The head gasket blew within the first week and I thought it was a bad sign of things to come, but the car proved me wrong. I drove this car VERY HARD and it just asked for more. It was a 4 speed automatic that received many neutral drops. The engine sized up on me one day after driving it very hard and I thought I had finally killed it, nope I put some oil additive in it and let it sit for a few days and off she was again for about another 10k miles. This was the best car I ever owned.

Bought 7 year old Chevy Cavalier 2D. Drove it now for 19 years!

In 2010, put in another oil change, water pump. Mechanic fixed the over head interior light and fan. Love this car! Has turned over 100K miles 6 times! Same engine. Replacement parts hard to find, but still out there. Will drive this one till I die. Get comments on it... guys want to know if I want to sell. With this economy? No way. Can fill car with gas at $3.00 a gallon with about $25.00. You can't beat that!

I do agree, very good car. Mine is a 2 door, stick 4 speed, and really good 4 banger, except I think the half shaft is going out, but I also kind of rode it a little around my dad's acreage, and it's pretty bumpy, and it still works.

There is one question I'm wondering about; today I went to a "you pull it" in Omaha, and not one 87, because mine was the one with only 1 mirror, and I was looking for one, and of all the 2200 cars, there not one 87; there was an 88 and an 86, but the darn mirrors were different.

Overall, the car runs great.

1987 Chevrolet Cavalier CL 2.8 MPFI from North America

Summary:

I will own this car until my dying day

Faults:

Bought with cracked radiator tank... this is common due to it being plastic.

Oil pressure reads totally unreliable in digital dash.

Lock-up solenoid in transmission went at 220,000 miles.

Drivers door hinge had to be replaced at 200k miles.

Paint is TERRIBLE. (original)

General Comments:

I bought this car for $250 off a friend, and I have never gotten so much for so little money. I have been using the car as a delivery vehicle and cannot believe the abuse it has withstood. Despite her extremely high mileage, this car still screams tires and wins every race she has been challenged to. Off-the-line response and speed is amazing, but the high-revving engine doesn't allow for much top-end performance. The interior is very comfortable and easy on the eyes. I have 2 other cars, and my Z24 has the coldest blowing A/C of all 3. I would recommend this car to anyone based on her durability, performance, and longevity of the engine.

1987 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, CS 2.8 MPFI from North America

Summary:

The best car I've ever had!!!

Faults:

Well, the dash is a given!

I worked around the dash going all together, now my dash works with my parking lights on, but no dimmer switch.

Had to change the crank sensor, that was hectic!

Drivers seat needs to be replaced.

Motor mount has failed (front, right)

General Comments:

I have had the car almost 4 years, and the only things I have had to replace were the common maintainence parts, brakes, etc.

I have 500,000 kms on this engine, and the engine still sounds like it just rolled off the assembly line.

Bottom line: If you want a car with high handling and high performance potential, I would look for a 1987 Z24!

You're right about the 87 cavalier Z24, I had a white 87 Z24 for six years and It gave me no trouble at all. It ran well even with 200,000 miles on the clock. That was my first car and will be my most favorite.

I have an 87 z24 with 120.000 miles on it. I just got it painted viper red and it's a great car.

I've got 2 Cavaliers, one being the blue, and then a white one. The blue one was my first car, and well I totaled it, rollin it about 6 times, pretty much warping the frame to no end, but yet we got it out of the 6 foot drop off and creek it was in, and managed to drive it home.

The white one is the same, if not better than my old blue 1. The car has definitely got the hp to race most anybody, and do a real good job cause I kept up with a friend's BMW, as he thought his V8 twin turbo was so great. Just the best car you could buy IF you can find one.
