"Much improved, but still won't buy one"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

This is a rental car.

It's silver in color, if you look closely the bumper is different color compare to rest of the car.

You can hear the gas moving inside gas tank right after you shut off the engine. Don't trust the gas gauge because the reading is inconsitent.

The car has 8000KM, but break already making noise when applying. Also body noise when going over rough surfaces.

Severe torque steer if I floor the gas pedal.

Gas mileage higher than 2005 Corolla I drove last week.

Electronic push button gauge take your eye off the road, regular dial gauge is much safer in my opinion.

General comments?

Much improved over previous Chevrolet Cavalier, but Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic still a better buy for a little bit more. Plus you get better gas mileage and resale value.

It's a rental car so people drive it like there's no tomorrow. And its 'brakes' by the way.

Arrrggghhhh!!!

What are they teaching in schools nowadays?

I guess they stopped teaching spelling.

It's BRAKES not BREAKS!!!

Sorry about my spelling.

I admit this car is a huge improvements from Cavalier, but it's still a long way from Toyota Corolla. If you don't believe it, check out a silver Corolla, at least the bumper is same color.

I drove a rental Corolla with more mileage, people abuse it, but still the car hold up really well, how can you explain that?

Correcting my spelling mistake doesn't make the Cobalt a better car.

"It's silver in color, if you look closely the bumper is different color compare to rest of the car."

You obviously have never looked at some camrys... especially the tan or blue ones... take a look at those and then try to complain about the paint on the Cobalt.

Hi.

I know for a fact, the paint finish on a Toyota Camry is superior to a Chevrolet Cobalt, I don't drive a Toyota but I can tell you quality control on a Toyota is much better than Chevrolet's. My friend works at a body shop and he can tell just by looking at the finish. You must be a Cobalt owner or from a Chevrolet dealer, I respect your purchase decision, but I am entitle to my opinion.

Thanks.

J.

Hello, I'm another compulsive corrector, not just of spelling, but grammar and punctuation, so I hope you will appreciate that when you say, "yet I still like the previous generation Corolla/Prizm best", you should really be saying better instead of best as it's only two generations you are comparing.

If it were three, then better would be correct.

Spellchecker tells me Prism instead of Prizm but in this case, it's wrong.

The Cobalt is destined to become a staple of the car rental fleets, much like the model it replaced.

It's a decent car with no glaring faults. The only real question is how reliable will it be?

Let's not get carried away by calling it "great" or by making it into something it's not.

For those waiting for GM or any American automaker to build a "World Class" small car, I don't think it's economically feasible for them to do that.

Well, actually with sky rocketing fuel prices, it might not be such a bad idea, however many imports have already beaten them to the punch.

Saturn was supposed to be the marque to do it for GM, but they more or less turned out to be just more of the same

except for having plastic body panels.

In my humble opinion, the last truly good small car GM sold, was the Corolla based Prizm.

I both agree and disagree with the above statement. I think the Ford Focus is actually a pretty good car that sold like crazy in the U.K. I saw how popular they were over there before they made it to our shores. I bought an 05 Focus and it seems fairly well put together. The paint could be better and the body has a few irregular gaps, but the acceleration/ handling (2.3 litre engine) is wonderful and for the price, I am very happy. For some reason, GM cars could never get away from the big plastic, bubbly interiors that were big in the 80's. I think the main reason for the American auto industry producing poor quality cars is because they have to make them much cheaper than their foreign counterparts because the auto unions force the big3 to pay their employees so much. I am not saying they do not deserve it, but prices have to be controlled at some point, so the quality takes a back seat to fit/finish and quality.

I agree with the last comment on how the autoworkers are paid too much. Do they really deserve it? We will never know... However, certianly don't agree with the Ford Focus. I saw how popular it was in Europe before it went to the US, and it has always been a nitorious POS. Should have stayed in Europe. 2.3L is not a bad engine, but the problems lie in the other stuff. Trannys leak a ton, air bags deploy from hard braking. Is also very fugly. Am impressed, however, with the security key for the stereos where you just remove the buttons from the radio. First saw those on a Ford Fiesta in Italy, and thought that was ahead of its time. My car, an 02 Sunfire, makes it so if the radio is moved to another vehicle, it cannot be used period. The computer has to provide the correct VIN for it to come on. Hope I never have to replace that 900 dollar item there...

I agree with the reviewer. Cobalts are absolute garbage, and as usual, GM can't deliver, and still makes sub par junk.

Ah yes, these pages were designed for people to knock vehicles they know little about. I find it all so amusing. My Cobalt has 25,000 miles on it, it's an LS with a sport package. No problems at all, 34 miles to the gallon (all you SUV drivers commenting on the cobalt can enjoy that fact) and I get all kinds of looks from the ladies because of it. I use synthetic oil and wash regularly. Don't be jealous because you bought a Civic or Corolla instead. Go and trade in those less than spectacular vehicles for the Chevy Cobalt. Then, you will understand.

I work at a body shop here in wisconsin and the bumper is a different color because it got hit and the rental car company replaced it with a used one or didn't take the time to tint it. This is common with all vehicles. Also do not blame the union for gm and fords problems. The ceo's of gm and ford make billions compared to the hard working union members that have to deal with faulty parts and other engineering problems that isn't their fault. Does everyone think that the middle class shouldn't exist?? This must be a republican website!!! We should all make 8$ an hour!!! Except for management they are worth billions!!!

Or, one could make the argument that decades of staunch union labor practices, in a way, have led to the financial debacle that GM and Ford are now in. Are the unions totally to blame? Of course not--but the UAW often puts unfair demands on the company that EMPLOYS these people.

"Is this a Republican web site"? No, it's a public forum for automobile owners. Even a Democrat should understand that.

The Chevy Cobalt is just another prime example of how General Motors is flushing itself down the toilet. I wouldn't trade my Toyota for 3 of these steaming piles of poor engineering.

The union argument (that they "forced" American companies to become uncompetitive) is ridiculous if you consider Henry Ford essentially created the American automobile industry WHILE doubling prevailing wages for his workers (yes, I know he later tried to destroy the unions blah blah blah).

So if nearly 100 years ago Ford could make huge profits WHILE offering a decent wage why can't American companies today?

It all comes down to the accountants who haven't a clue about branding or quality and just want to make money in the short term. Well, American car companies have had decades of warning and they STILL haven't woken up.

The Cobalt is the epitome of American small cars? Too funny.
