1986 Chevrolet Sprint Hatchback 1.0 L 3-cylinder from North America

Summary:

A great bargain in every way

Faults:

At 60,000 miles I had to replace the air conditioner drier and humidifier.

At 170,000 miles I replaced the timing belt, all engine gaskets, distributor and solenoid.

The silver paint, like all GM silver paint I have experienced, has faded quickly even though carefully maintained.

Interior materials are cheap, as one might expect with a car that, fully loaded with all options available in 1986, listed at $7800.

General Comments:

This has been a great little car. It has been extremely dependable, gets superb gas mileage (40-43) and still manages to surprise people leaving red lights (not a speedster, but very nimble for a car with only 48 horsepower).

With 178,000 miles on it, it still runs and drives great.

With gas prices what they are, I'm still very happy with it as a "work car".

1986 Chevrolet Sprint 2 door hatchback 1.0 carb gas from North America

Summary:

A tough little warrior

Faults:

Replaced both drive shafts twice (second set free under warranty) and clutch once.

Under normal maintenance, it needed a set tires twice, a muffler, a fuel filter, an air filter, a few bulbs here and there, an alternator and one set of brake pads/shoes all around. Also an oil change with filter about every 5,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the most economical car I have driven. I purchased the car for 800 dollars. I have driven this car farther than any new car I have had in the past (150,000 miles). It also has a "spunky" motor that zips around pretty well and can still get 50 miles to the gallon of gas on the highway.

It is also a very tough little car. Since I had the car I accidently hit a pheasant, a deer, a raccoon, and a pick-up in a parking lot. Also, it was hailed on and by softball sized hail which blew out the front and rear windows and left several dimples in the roof and hood of the car.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Best commuter car ever made

Faults:

At 140,000 miles the timing belt gave out (no engine damage otherwise), but since I had acquired a wrecked Sprint with 20 miles on a rebuild, I installed the new engine, and clutch, that was in it. The brakes have been done twice.

General Comments:

I am 6ft, 250lbs and am perfectly comfortable in this car.

This sucker also gets me to work and back (60 miles, round trip per day) for about $16 a week.

I love this car and will continue to repair it as needed till it or I die.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Knuckle scrapper

Faults:

The only thing that I've had any problems with is the carb/fuel system. It's a pain to have it worked on because the cars weren't in production long enough for anyone to get to know it that well.

General Comments:

This car is a very economical and reliable, but it is also very HARD to work on, it takes forever to do simple task because everything is so close together, it's a real knuckle scrapper.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Never dies

Faults:

I think the only things that have gone wrong with this car are average things that just happen - brakes, altenator etc...

General Comments:

I have found this car to be very reliable, the only thing that really bothers me is the fact that the seatbelt wraps around the seat back adjuster and can cause the seat to recline back while driving. I've about caused several wrecks because of this.

This car has NEVER failed to start for me in all these years. Unfortunatley I'm sure that I will have to replace the car soon as I feel it is losing power. It still goes pretty good, but with the cars today it just can't keep up.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Slow slow slow..

Faults:

Altenator caught fire.

A/C was broke when I got it - took the shop three months to get the part to fix it (summer was over).

Runs hot during hot weather seasons.

Grinding noise in the front even after replacing all brakes on the car.

Carb is a piece of JUNK, always missing and backfiring.

General Comments:

This car is WAY to slow to even be on the road. I've been almost hit several times thanks to this car's lack of power. You have to shift constantly to keep up with traffic, I mean keep the pedal to the FLOOR! NO POWER AT ALL WITH THE A/C ON, car will NOT pick up any speed, you will just have to rev up, that's it.

I must say that this car is very reliable and very good on gas - I average about 50mpg.

It's got high mileage and it doesn't use any oil whatsoever.
